The raunchy new sitcom, “Are You There, Chelseaâ€Â aired again Wednesday evening at 8:30 pm filling the half hour with an endless stream of vulgar sex jokes, crude dialog, and the promotion of heavy and irresponsible drinking. NBC, the network which airs “Are You There, Chelsea?â€Â (originally titled “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelseaâ€Â), euphemistically describes the lead character Chelsea as a “sexually dynamic ‘advanced drinker’.â€ÂÂ
One TV reviewer more accurately described her this way – a “slutty, boozy bartender.â€Â Please help us continue the pressure upon the corporations empowering this trash. While most of the show is far too crude to give examples of, the following should indicate why we are so concerned about this show geared to young people. The lead character, Chelsea, is regularly shown to have sex with anyone with a Y chromosome, but on this latest episode even the elderly are portrayed as sexually promiscuous.  One of the character’s little old grandma talks about her illicit sex life – offering to give her granddaughter sex tips based on her numerous sexual partners. This, after the grandmother is also shown getting drunk and after her granddaughter calls her grandma a b—h  – all set to a canned laugh track to show the audience how “acceptableâ€Â and “funnyâ€Â this is. One of the advertising sponsors of “Are You There, Chelsea?â€Â is JC Penney – a corporation dependent upon family shoppers! Other advertisers include Macy’s, Olive Garden, L’Oreal, Kay Jewelers, and others.
