Monumental Movie: A significant tool to turn us back that we may go forward

By: Chris Johnson

By now, most of us who are conservative and politically active have heard how important religion was to the founders. We know that the founders believed our rights came from God, not the government, and that’s why the government cannot take them away. You can see in both the actions and words of America’s founders that their religious beliefs influenced every part of their lives, including hammering out the details of how our nation would be put together.

Leaders of the day like Washington, Adams, and Witherspoon stressed the importance of morality and religion to a civil society. Those of us who fight for these things in America today believe we stand on our founders’ shoulders.

But how did the founders have such a strong spiritual foundation? What historical figures did they have to go back to as examples? Whose shoulders did the founders stand on?

That is where a great new documentary from Kirk Cameron comes in. “Monumental” follows Cameron as he traces the steps of our forefathers and their journey to the New World. The film looks at both the struggles that the pilgrims went through and the motives that drove them to persevere.

“Monumental” explains how the passion of the pilgrims was fed by their newly acquired ability to read the Word of God for themselves and their realization that the state church was not following.

It explains how the pilgrims were all members of one separatist congregation in constant danger of persecution.

Perhaps, most tellingly, the film looks at the “Mayflower Compact” – a document drawn up after the ship had reached America, but before anyone had stepped ashore – which began with a statement of their main purpose – “to glorify God and advance the Christian faith”.

The film’s website give the following synopsis: “Long regarded as “the land of opportunity,” there’s no question the tiny band of religious outcasts who founded this country hit upon a formula for success that went way beyond what they could have imagined. How else can you explain the fact that they established a nation that has become the best example of civil, economic and religious liberty the world has ever known?

What formula did they discover? What motivated them to come here in the first place? More importantly, how can we apply these same foundational truths today?”

“Monumental” is an educational, inspirational, exciting film for a Christian patriot.

Cameron brought this movie with a live simulcast introduction to select theaters around the country for one night only. Several members of the ADA staff saw it in a packed theater in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, and, according to Cameron, the other theaters showing the film were also very full.

“Monumental” opens in the following cities on March 30th: Montgomery, AL; Thousand Oaks, CA; Vero Beach, FL; Cordova, TN; Knoxville, TN; and Plano, TX. You can also request that Monumental come to your local theater at DemandtheMovie.com/Monumental.

The movie will also be released on DVD and aired on television in mid 2012.
