Intelligent Design vs. Arrogant Atheism

Once the host of a popular science show for kids, Bill Nye "the Science Guy," has decided to branch out and become a parenting coach.

The PBS personality recently made a YouTube video telling parents not to teach their children about the Christian doctrine of Creation.

More specifically, he attacked the Christian belief that God created the universe as unscientific. Asked on CBS to defend his video, Nye said, "You can believe what you want religiously. Religion is one thing, but science, provable science is something else."

Nye continued, "I say to grown-ups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world where everything is completely inconsistent with the universe, that's fine. But don't make your kids do it, because we need them."

Is it really inconsistent with the universe though, Mr. Nye?

A year ago, Nye, winner of the 2010 Humanist of the Year Award, made similar remarks in a PopularMechanics.com interview.

"Science is the key to our future, and if you don’t believe in science, then you’re holding everybody back. And it’s fine if you as an adult want to run around pretending or claiming that you don’t believe in evolution, but if we educate a generation of people who don’t believe in science, that’s a recipe for disaster. We talk about the Internet. That comes from science. Weather forecasting. That comes from science. The main idea in all of biology is evolution. To not teach it to our young people is wrong."

A man much more qualified than myself to deconstruct "the Science Guy's" complaint is Ken Ham, founder of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum. He did just that in a blog post after seeing Nye's interview.

"When Bill Nye uses the word “evolution” here, he is talking about the belief in molecules-to-man change (e.g., reptiles changing into birds, or ape-like creatures changing into man). Such a view relates to historical science and involves beliefs about the past that can’t be observed—times when no human witness was there. But putting “evolution” and technology like the Internet together is ridiculous. The Internet involves observational (operational) science—lab research in the field of physics, the use of computers and programming done by intelligent human beings, etc…

… And to say (as most evolutionists falsely claim) that the main idea in all of biology is evolution is also ridiculous. Students would be much further ahead if they were just taught real biology (such as the nature of cells, reproduction, mutations, and natural selection—all of which creationists accept as sound science) without the baggage of the false view of origins that detracts from this discipline…

Bill Nye then goes on and states, 'having a generation of kids not believing in science is bad for the world.'However, because of what he has previously stated, he is really saying that 'believing in science' and believing in 'evolution'are the same! This is the way unsuspecting kids are brainwashed to believe the lie of evolution in the public school education system, science museums, and science programs on TV."

The Creation Museum also produced a video to answer Nye's degrading treatment of Creationism.

One Atheist professor explains the motive of scientists like Nye to discount "intelligent design," an umbrella theory above Creationism.

"I believe the defenders of intelligent design deserve our gratitude for challenging a scientific world view that owes some of the passion displayed by its adherents precisely to the fact that it is thought to liberate us from religion."
