Akin All In

Yesterday was the deadline for Rep. Todd Akin to bow out of the Missouri Senate race and have his name removed from the ballot. He did not leave the race. He is the candidate, and his name will be on the ballot as the Republican nominee.

If you are in a line of work where you have to talk all day, which is what most politicians do, you will make mistakes. (See Joe Biden.) Akin made a big one.

But let's be absolutely clear about this. The media and some in the GOP establishment are suggesting that Akin's mistake was to talk about the sanctity of life. That's wrong. Too many in the party establishment are making an even greater mistake by saying too little about values issues in this campaign!

Todd Akin's mistake was that he addressed one of the most difficult questions related to the sanctity of life in an inartful way that seemed insensitive to the victims of rape. But Akin's mistake was compounded, in my view, when the party establishment came down on Akin with more passion and disgust than they have ever come down on Barack Obama for his radical positions, even supporting infanticide in cases when a baby survives an abortion!

So where are we now? Todd Akin is 100% closer to the values of Missouri voters than liberal Democrat Claire McCaskill. On every major issue — Obamacare, taxes, values — Todd Akin is with us; McCaskill is not. If Republicans are going to take the majority in the Senate, we need to win this seat.

Conservatives like Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Phyllis Schlafly have made it clear they will do everything they can to win this seat. So will I. We will announce our plans soon.

Did You Get Your Obama Phone?

Mitt Romney got roasted by the media over his own inartful comments about not being able to win over 47% of the population that receives some form of government benefits. The left-wing media said Romney was talking about soldiers and retirees.

Romney should not have used that 47% figure, but everyone knows what he was talking about. Just in case there is any confusion, here is a good example. This woman is an African American, but this kind of dependency comes in every color.

Preserving a legitimate safety net is important. "Obama phones" are not. The kind of dependency that leads an American woman to believe the American people owe her a phone or free birth control, and that the president gave it to her, will destroy us.

A Glimpse Of The Future

Everyone has been talking about Obama's economic disaster of the last four years. The real question is what will the next four years be like. In recent days we have gotten a glimpse of the future if Obama is reelected.

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Business Roundtable survey of CEOs found that just 29% of corporate executives expect their companies will hire additional workers in the next six months. But 34% expect they will have to lay off workers. According to Reuters, "U.S. chief executives' view of the economy … is now as bleak as it was in the immediate aftermath of the last recession."

Today, the durable goods report came out. This is a key measurement of manufacturing production that includes big ticket items meant to last for years like aircraft and home appliances. Last month, orders for durable goods dropped a staggering 13.2%. That is the worst one-month decrease in four years.

And there was even more bad news today. Economic growth in the second quarter of this year, initially reported at a weak rate of 1.7%, was revised downward to an anemic 1.3%.

America can't afford four more years of Barack Obama's failed economic policies!

Why The Stonewalling?

Speaking at the United Nations yesterday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the attack on the Benghazi consulate that killed our ambassador and three other Americans was a terrorist attack likely carried out by Al Qaeda operatives. Tell us something we don't know!

The story is why the administration is still stonewalling when it comes to this issue. Unbelievably, CNN reported this morning that FBI investigators have yet to arrive in Benghazi and "the crime scene has not been secured." Why the delay? Again, from CNN: "bureaucratic infighting between the FBI and Justice Department on the one hand, and the State Department on the other."

The incompetence that resulted in four dead Americans, including our ambassador, and the continued bungling of the investigation should be front page news. This is a major foreign policy fiasco, and the American people should hold Barack Obama accountable by firing him on November 6th!
