U.S. Supreme Court and FCC indecency policy to be ended?

By: American Decency Staff

I received an email from a long time friend out of Dallas who has followed the trends of the Federal Communications Commission for many years even prior to our long-time, faithfulness and effective efforts to help usher Howard Stern off terrestrial radio. My friend sent me the following link regarding the U.S. Supreme Court and the FCC. http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=2223980&spid=30800 It is entitled: IS THE FCC'S VAGUE INDECENCY POLICY FINALLY COMING TO AN END. I left my teaching profession in 1988 to try to make a difference in opposing indecency and pornography.   That is my testimony.  I was concerned as I saw that what was being broadcast was negatively impacting our children and families. I admired AFA’s founder and former president Don Wildmon for his righteous indignation, vision, strong stand and faithfulness of trying to address the degradation of television. No one from my perspective has stood anymore effectively and boldly than brother Don! Yet, despite incredible fortitude and intelligence, even Don wasn’t able to get the clergy, the church, the networks, the advertisers, the FCC to stop the filth during his long  tenacious tenure as AFA’s leader and media watchdog. Sadly, the FCC has largely been a farce. In recent years, hundreds of thousands of complaints have been filed with the FCC.  We  ourselves at ADA have filed more than a few,  too, particularly in regard to the Howard Stern Show in the late 1990s and early 2000s.  These painstaking complaints (they are time consuming to file them correctly) were just received as a “blip on the screenâ€Â.  We carefully and thoroughly documented our concerns furnishing written transcripts and cassette tapes of particular segments that clearly crossed the line. After weeks and weeks of silence, the FCC sometimes would respond by sending us a form letter that gave no satisfaction and leaving us with little to no confidence in the FCC’s authenticity in responding to valid complaints. As ineffective as the FCC has been for generations, at least there is a modicum of a degree of civility in that, indeed, at least there is some adherence to the prior to 10:00 p.m. broadcasting where the ugliest of ugly is held back. That, however, now appears to be up for grabs.  That’s what the article forwarded by my friend is about. http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=2223980&spid=30800 Pray for the U.S. Supreme Court as they consider whether to further weaken the FCC standards mentioned in the article. It is so good to suggest an action point.  I have none other than what we do regularly – urge you to express righteous indignation to advertisers. We have been centering upon the NBC summer sex fest “Love Bitesâ€Â.  Week after week it is disgusting.  Last Thursday nights advertisers include: ……………….
