The ignorance of higher education

By: American Decency Staff

In February Northwestern University came under scrutiny after a professor scheduled a demonstration of perverse sex acts between a woman and her boyfriend.   According to a Fox News report, the professor, John Michael Bailey, “… allowed a guest lecturer, Ken Melvoin-Berg, to narrate the use of the sex toy — referred to as a "f—saw" on a woman who was not a Northwestern student during the presentation.   …â€Â At the time, the liberal media tried to make us think this was not a big deal – interviewing a parade of college students who touted the message they have been indoctrinated with – “open-mindedness, tolerance, and freedom of expression.â€Â Instead of following the liberal-elitist party line that typifies academia, perhaps the leadership of Northwestern listened to the “close-minded,â€Â ‘intolerant,â€Â “prudishâ€Â parents, alumni, and university donors – realizing who butters their bread.  Or perhaps there are actually some reasonable, discerning minds at Northwestern who realized this course was damaging not just to their reputation, but to the still impressionable minds they are in the business of molding.  I’d like to think the later, but I’m guessing it’s the former.  However, the good news is that Northwestern University has cancelled this course for the upcoming school year. Northwestern University students will not be offered a course on human sexuality during the upcoming school year following an explicit after-class demonstration involving a woman and a motorized sex toy in February, school officials announced Monday.  … On Monday, Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said [Professor John Michael] Bailey will now have "other teaching assignments" in the coming year. "Courses in human sexuality are offered in a variety of academic departments in other universities, and Northwestern is reviewing how such a course best fits into the University’s curriculum," Cubbage said in a statement. "At Northwestern University, the dean of a college/school has the right and responsibility to determine course assignments."  … Northwestern University President Morton Shapiro later said he was "troubled and disappointed" by the demonstration and called for an investigation following reports of the incident. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/05/10/northwestern-university-cancels-human-sexuality-class-professor-defends/?test=latestnews While this is surprisingly good news, one has to question why this course wasn’t cancelled long before.  In a report at the time of the incident, Professor Bailey stated this in describing the class he teaches:  “I teach a large (nearly 600 person) human sexuality class at Northwestern University. During class I lecture about the science of sexuality. Many days after class I organize optional events. These events primarily comprise speakers addressing interesting aspects of sexuality. This year, for example, we have had a panel of gay men speaking about their sex lives, a transsexual performer, two convicted sex offenders, an expert in female sexual health and sexual pleasure, a plastic surgeon, a swinging couple, and the February 21st panel led by Ken MelvoinJBerg, on “networking for kinky people.â€Â So obviously the university was okay with transsexual performers, swingers, and other forms of sexual deviance and perversity. While Northwestern leadership may have realized there are still some within our warped culture who recognize the difference between right and wrong, what is appropriate and what is not, loving sexuality and pornographic degradation – Professor Bailey obviously doesn’t get it. Bailey said in a statement issued to FoxNews.com in March. "Furthermore, earlier that day in my lecture I had talked about the attempts to silence sex research, and how this largely reflected sex negativity … I did not wish, and I do not wish, to surrender to sex negativity and fear." Bailey doesn’t get that he’s not opening up his students to ‘positivity’ and a healthy view of sexuality.  By promoting such deviancy as normal and acceptable behavior he is the one setting his students on a path of negative and frightening consequences. Summer Event with Speaker Gary Bauer – “For Such a Time as Thisâ€Â Gary Bauer is one of our nation’s strongest spokesmen for clarity and truth in regard to the immense attacks on faith, family and freedom. In these days of societal confusion and upheaval we need the exhortation and the information that Gary Bauer will bring. These are concerning times and we are privileged to have Gary Bauer challenge and encourage us.
