Thanks to Our Veterans

By: American Decency Staff

By Chris Johnson Today we are in one of the most divided times in our country's history. Rarely, if ever, have lines been so clearly drawn between the right and left in our nation. There are few people out there, from my point of view, who can honestly say, "I don't really know where I stand politically." Everyone has an opinion on politics in 2011. What cannot be contested is that we still have a right to argue about politics – or gay marriage or abortion or what is aired on TV – and that right to free speech is owed to men and women who have worn the uniform of an American soldier.Today is Veteran's Day, which President Obama has officially proclaimed to be dedicated to "the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve the liberty of our Nation, the families who support them, and the heroes no longer with us." The President's proclamation goes on to say, "in an unbroken line of valor stretching across more than two centuries, our veterans have charged into harm's way, sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice, to protect the freedoms that have blessed America. Whether Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard, they are our Nation's finest citizens, and they have shown the heights to which Americans can rise when asked and inspired to do so." Although for many of us there are few things we would agree on with President Obama, today we can step across the gorge of disagreements to honor our troops. For some, there are wars and battles that America has fought that they would have rather seen us stay out of. But even they must acknowledge that when our soldiers have gone into battle, they have done it with the motivation of keeping the people of America safe and free. One image doing the rounds on Facebook today puts the sacrifice of our veteran's into perspective. "What is a Veteran?" it asks. "Someone who at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount of up to, and including, his life. Thank you, to all the men and women who have signed that check. ========================================================= Your support is important to our ability to make a difference.
