Pleasurable book draws parents’ ire

By: American Decency Staff

The following news report comes from WOOD –TV channel 8, Grand Rapids.  It is one of those times of giving credit where credit is due. Quoting: GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The book title seems innocent enough, "Boy Minus Girl," and a local doctor's office thought it was targeted to elementary-aged children. Then, a supervisor at Saint Mary’s Heritage Pediatrics read the first lines of the first chapter: Seduction Tip Number 1 — an exercise to help pleasure a woman. Supervisor Paula Pennington told 24 Hour News 8 she was shocked that First Book a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit that distributes free books to low-income children, sent 17 boxes of the books to her office. She had planned to give them out to young patients. Instead, she gave the books, all 204 of them, to WOOD TV’s Maranda. "She wasn't sure if maybe she was just too old and out of touch, and that maybe this kind of material is now mainstream for kids," Maranda said. "We were excited. We love free book donations, and I thought, what a great thing, so, we went over and picked them up." Maranda hoped to hand them out at her popular Park Parties, but asked her 19-year-old daughter to read it first. "Within three minutes, my daughter is like, 'Mom, you are not handing these things out. This is disgusting.' And I thought, 'What would be disgusting to a 19-year-old?'" Maranda will not be passing out the books. http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/local/kent_county/Pleasureable-book-draws-parents-ire Maranda, is the Children and Family Services Manager at WOOD TV and oversees the development of station projects that target kids and families.  One of these projects is WOOD TV’s “Park Partiesâ€Â with free activities for children. In this news article, there is reason to be encouraged and to give thanks.    I encourage you to read the full article, to be encouraged and express appreciation to WOOD TV. (1) Maranda was considering giving away these donated books, but asked her 19 year old daughter to read one first who found the books absolutely disgusting. (2) Maranda made the decision that the books would not be passed out. (3) Maranda stood amazed that the books were passed out at all due to their disgusting, sexually perverse content and propaganda targeting young people. (4) Maranda made the comment in the news article that “We’ve got to be vigilant and be on it – what kind of stuff is being put into our kids’ head, 24-7. We applaud WOOD TV, Grand Rapids for revealing this important news item and letting us know that there are people even within the media who will stand up for our kids and families. Thirteen year olds are not “young adultsâ€Â and a book featuring “sex tipsâ€Â for minors is certainly not an appropriate educational tool! In addition to thanking WOOD TV, we also urge you to contact the nonprofit agency First Book which distributes this sexually-explicit book to minors.
