NBCs “Love Bites” casual sex, homosexual sex, and adulterous fantasies

By: American Decency Staff

When it comes to advertising one often hears the lame adage “sex sells.â€ÂÂ  While I certainly don’t agree with that premise, sadly it is the fall back position of many ad agencies.  And the television industry often stoops to the same salacious and tired theme.  However, when it comes to television, no matter how high the sexual voltage is amped up, if the ratings are poor and the advertisers don’t buy ad time, the show will ultimately fail. We’ve seen that just recently with the boundary-pushing MTV show “Skins.â€ÂÂ  This sexually explicit teen drama premiered on MTV last January garnering great media attention and also great outrage from parents and groups such as ADA and other media-watchdogs.  However, no matter how racy and edgy the show, what “Skinsâ€Â failed to garner were ratings and advertising support.  After the controversial content of “Skinsâ€Â was revealed, major advertisers fled in droves, pulling their ads.  And ratings within their target audience of 12-34 year olds fell from a debut rating of 3.4 to a rating of 1.2. Subsequently, MTV has taken a bite of humble pie and cancelled “Skins.â€Â Yet the networks are often slow, if not downright dim-witted, when it comes to learning this lesson.  Last night NBC aired the second episode of its raunchy summer filler show, “Love Bites.â€Â As we reported earlier, (https://americandecency.org/archives/nbc-and-love-bites-leave-a-mark-on-morality/), “Love Bitesâ€Â bills itself as a “romantic comedyâ€Â but is nothing more than an illicit sex fest.  With three intertwining storylines in each episode, each segment outdoes the one before on the raunchy meter. Without going into specifics, the first segment featured one young woman talking to her girlfriend about the sex she’s been having with her boyfriend – whom she’s had a total of three dates with.  The boyfriend wants to continue the non-committal sex, but not a relationship.  Later the two girls, one who is very pregnant, go with several guys to a strip club where girl on girl lap dances are shown.  This scene, filled with lewd sexual references, portrays stripping as acceptable and a positive lifestyle for girls to choose. The second segment in basically a promo for endorsing gay marriage and the homosexual lifestyle.  When a gay man’s traditional, conservative parents come to visit and meet their son’s gay lover, the father especially is depicted as a stereotypical “homophobe.â€ÂÂ  The father is disturbed by the erotic art hanging on the wall depicting his son’s genitals and is repulsed by the sounds of the two men supposedly engaging in a sex act during the night.  Of course the story resolution has the father seeing the “error of his waysâ€Â and embracing his son’s perverse lifestyle and openly accepting and blessing “marriageâ€Â of the two homosexual men. The third segment actually features a legitimate married couple.  However, even here “Love Bitesâ€Â can’t depict a loving, normal relationship.  In bed scenes the husband and wife share the fantasies each has about other people while having sex.  They agree there’s nothing wrong with this virtual adultery and an image is shown of the husband dreaming about his wife kissing the woman he fantasizes about. “Love Bitesâ€Â is filled with illicit sexual content and crudity from beginning to end.  It sends the message that casual sex, homosexual sex, and adulterous fantasies are all good and acceptable.  However, as MTV learned with “Skins,â€Â sex doesn’t always sell.
