NBC and Love Bites Leave a Mark on Morality

By: American Decency Staff

It seems as if each summer the networks go to extremes to tempt TV viewers away from their outdoor fun and instead encourage people to stay inside in front of their flat screens and plasmas for the summer line up of new shows.  But rather than using actual creativity to draw viewers, the networks heat up the airwaves even further by adding more sex and seduction to their TV programs.  The worst we’ve seen of this summer season is NBC’s new show “Love Bitesâ€Â which premiered this past Thursday evening.  NBC describes the show this way:  “A romantic comedy anthology featuring three connected modern stories of love, sex, marriage and dating.â€Â However, there is nothing either romantic or funny about this show.  “Love Bitesâ€Â features three storylines, not about love, but about illicit sex.  In the first segment a twenty-something young woman lies and tells a guy in a bar she’s a virgin in hopes of gaining his interest and getting him into her bed.  The whole theme of virginity and “waiting for the right oneâ€Â is portrayed as abnormal and freakish.  For example, a friend tells the guy from the bar:  “A hot, twenty-something virgin in this day and age – it’s like finding a unicorn!â€Â The next segment goes downhill from there, showing an engaged couple living together.   This segment’s theme was all about the use of sex toys, references to bondage, and features graphic verbiage and bed scenes of masturbation and oral sex.  It also portrays the engaged couple watching porn together in bed. Finally, the last storyline features a married man who has an agreement with his wife that they can each commit adultery without considering it “cheating.â€ÂÂ  They have an exemption list of certain celebrities that they could have sex with if the opportunity ever arose.  This concept of a married couple setting parameters for adultery being acceptable in any circumstance is twisted and sick on so many levels.  Yet even more sickening is the scene where the husband actually has an opportunity to have sex with the celebrity he’s been lusting after.  With initially no thought for his wife, he excitedly gets a condom from his friend who encourages him on for this adulterous act.  At the last minute he changes his mind and doesn’t go through with it, yet this man, who gleefully planned the tryst with no qualms, is portrayed as a saint because he nobly chose not to physically commit adultery -  even though he had all along in his thought life. What “Love Bitesâ€Â teaches the young target audience is that sex outside of marriage is normal and acceptable and morality and self-restraint isn’t.  It teaches viewers that love-making is not about intimacy and tenderness, but about the kinkiest and most perverse acts one can come up with.   It sends the message to men and to women that pornography is an exciting marital stimulant to watch together instead of portraying porn as the addictive, degrading, marriage-destroying evil that it truly is.  And “Love Bitesâ€Â trivializes the sanctity of marriage, fidelity, and commitment – and instead legitimizes adultery and lusting after others. Some of the advertisers that sponsored this episode of “Love Bitesâ€Â are Old Navy, Domino’s Pizza, Dodge/Chrysler, The Home Depot, Pizza Hut, Olive Garden, Sprint, and Farmer’s Insurance.
