As we and others have said before, the danger with "All-American Muslim" is not that it is proselytizing viewers, but that it is closing the curtain on the violent and extreme wing of Muslim theology. The Muslims on this show seem to be good people, but these do not represent the entire religion. There are extreme factions of this religion and the more moderate groups have done an unsatisfactory job of denouncing their violent counter parts. This week's episode focused on a football game between a Muslim team and a Catholic team. It was essentially like any other rivalry – no one called for beheading the quarterback or taking back the holy city of Dearborn. That, of course, was the point – to show that Muslim kids are just like any other kids. The game took place during Ramadan, meaning the players could not eat or drink during the first portion of the game and hadn't done so all day. The Catholic players who were interviewed were very respectful of this, even if it may have been a partial cause of the trouncing they gave the Muslim team. To show the range of beliefs, even in the Muslims on this program, there was one man who thought the team should have broken their fast for the game. Another storyline followed a woman who wants to open an alcohol-serving club, and this week she tells her mom about her desires. Mom essentially says absolutely not, she would not support it, because it was not a fitting business for a woman. She suggests a clothing store or a nail salon. This woman who wants to open the club is not what you would call a conservative woman. She dresses provocatively for any demographic, let alone a Muslim woman, and she rarely attends mosque. Tonight, however, is the end of Ramadan and she decides to attend with her family. In spite of having what she thinks are modest clothes, her mother gives her a head scarf and a cloak to wear. Another little piece of propaganda thrown in is when one of the Muslim women meets with her Lebanese Christian friend. She says that their religions are "SO similar." Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome that she has a Christian friend and that they have mutual respect. But while Muslims and Christians may agree on many social stances – homosexuality, abstinence until marriage, modesty, etc. – the basis for our religions are completely different. Christianity is based on a just and merciful God who cannot abide sin, so he sent his son to take the punishment for the sins we have committed. Islam is based on a God who cannot abide sin, so you'd better do more good in your life than bad or you're going to burn in Hell. It must be our prayer that our God shows Muslims who the One, True God really is and that they would come to Him. ========================================================== Your support is important to our ability to make a difference.
