TLC aired another ‘heart-warming’ episode of "All-American Muslim" Sunday.  A show that paints a picture of Islam as a wholesome and peace-loving religion – leaving out the fact that thousands of its followers are bent on killing wholesome, peace-loving Christians and Jews in the name of Allah. Great News! Twenty-four of twenty-five companies that American Decency Association targeted with emails did NOT advertise again during the next airing of this program. The following companies did not advertise again during the November 20,  episode of All-American Muslim: John Frieda Hair Products, Wal-Mart, Pet Smart, Dyson Vacuums, Kettle Potato Chips (Diamond Foods, Inc.), Ross Medical Education center, Law office of Karen E Groenhout, Clinique make-up, Centrum vitamins, T-Mobile, Leap Frog, Kahlua alcohol, TruMoo chocolate milk (Dean Foods), K-Mart, Home Depot, Sonic, Latisse, Airborne, Lake Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Amway, Sweet-N-Low, Art Van, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan See below for advertisers who supported this white-wash. The good news is that of the advertisers we asked you to contact after last week’s premiere episode, only one advertiser returned – Chase banking. In this week's episode, the public school allowed it's football practices to be scheduled in compliance with the month of Ramadan – which means practicing from ten o'clock at night to five o'clock in the morning – in spite of the fact that there are non-Muslims on the team. This is "safest for the majority of the kids," the coach explains to a concerned Christian parent, because Muslims cannot eat or drink during the day in the course of Ramadan. Just to put that in perspective, a valedictorian may not pray in the name of Jesus Christ during a graduation ceremony because that would violate the "separation of church and state," but a public school can force its students to observe part of an Islamic ritual fasting period. And public schools who dare not utter the word “Christmasâ€Â and instead sing “holidayâ€Â songs and have “holidayâ€Â programs – have no problem subjecting non-Muslim students to, in effect, honor Islamic law. This also means that the kids are going to school from 8:00 to 3:00 and then practicing from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. Is that really a good schedule for students? Another part of the episode worth mentioning follows a Muslim police officer as he protects a group of Christians protesting the annual Islamic Festival in Dearborn. Unfortunately, between the four parties involved – the Christians, the Muslims, TLC, and the Muslim police officer – the police officer is the one that I exited the segment with the most respect for. Obviously, if the officer had to protect the Christians, the Muslims were dangerous, but the Christians were a perfect example of how NOT to evangelize. TLC showed video of the Christian protestors, saying things like, "Shame on you, terrorists!" Shouting unfounded allegations at people you don't even know is not exactly an activity that comes from the pages of the Bible. However, they also shouted, "Mohammed was a pedophile!" which is a historically verifiable fact. Mohammed forced a six year-old girl into marrying him and consummated the marriage when she was nine. TLC, unsurprisingly, did not provide that context, allowing the unaware audience to assume that Christians are crazy and hateful. Even though that statement was true, however, you aren't going to convince someone to follow our merciful Savior by verbally punching them in the gut. The police officer, on the other hand, noted that it was his responsibility to protect their free speech, whether he agreed with it or not. I have to respect that. Not all police have been so sensible, however, most notably in last year's Muslim Festival when peaceful Christian evangelists, led by a former Muslim, were hand-cuffed, arrested, and spent the night in jail. http://www.answeringmuslims.com/p/dearborn.html Also, while TLC bends over backwards to depict American Muslims as peaceful and reasonable without showing the concern and threat of the radical side of the religion – the example TLC gives its viewers of Christianity is one of hate and intolerance. We also follow a young Muslim woman who wants have a child, but has not yet been able to. After a visit to the local "Islamic Center of Knowledge," the woman decides that that solution is to begin wearing a headscarf, which she had not worn for several years. The Imams' advice is that "when you have hijab, you have more blessing from God." The woman later says that she hopes that in return for becoming more devout by wearing the scarf, she hopes God will give her the gift of a child. Her family's reaction is definitely worth noting. One member of her family says that, "a woman is empowered when she wears a hijab, because she controls what a man can and cannot see." He might have a point if it wasn't for the fact that, when you get down to it, the whole idea behind a woman hiding her hair is that she is preventing men from lusting after her. So, the responsibility to avoid immorality is not on the man, or equally shared between the man and woman, it is the woman's duty to see that no one lusts after her. Remember a few months back when all those nutty women in Canada were doing "Slut Walks" because some cop said that when a woman dressed in a tempting way that didn't help them any when a potential rapist walked by (or something to that effect)? This is pretty much the same logic, except that when it was a law enforcement officer saying it, it was ridiculed as a horribly insensitive thing to say. But when Islam expresses the same idea, there’s "nothing to see here." The fact is, there are places in the Muslim world where if a woman can't prove she was raped, she could be stoned for adultery. I'm just highlighting the hypocrisy here. Obviously, this is not to put down the idea of modesty and responsible dress. I think never allowing any man who's not a blood relative to see your hair is a little excessive, but if you want to take it to that extreme that's your choice. The woman's father's reaction was one of those telling moments that tend to slip through the cracks on this show. "Now, when I look at my daughter I see a complete Muslim woman… I got my daughter back." It's not surprising that TLC doesn't tend to show the older, more traditional generation talking more often. That would not fit so nicely into the narrative of all Muslims trying to fit into American culture. It may, however, be a lot more accurate.
