“All American Muslim” continues its sham

TLC's (formerly known as The Learning Channel) Sunday night show "All-American Muslim" continues to attempt to reeducate the public on the dangerous ideology of Islam. In last night's episode, we were brought into a Lamaze class with a pregnant Muslim couple. We were told that neither of them knew any Muslim who had ever gone to a pregnancy class, but that they enjoyed it. Also, the skin-tight dress wearing Muslim woman who wants to open a dance club and bar in Dearborn finds a location for her business and frets about telling her family because she knows they will not approve. "All-American Muslim" also follows the coach of a local high school football team who is invited to a White House celebration of the end of the month of Ramadan. They focus on his struggle to decide whether or not to attend because his team has an important practice that same night. In a discussion between several of the Muslim stars, they even ask the question of whether or not President Obama is a Muslim. Most of them seem to believe he is not, although one quips that since he has the middle name "Hussein," he must be. Essentially, the show continues to push the idea that these Muslims are average, unthreatening, non-terrorists which I have no doubt that they are. The implication, however, is that these Muslims are representative of the entire Muslim community. Even in the several families featured in the show, there is a scale of devoutness, for lack of a better word, with some basically following the parts they like and ignoring the parts they don't (like the woman who wants to open a club and serve alcohol and the tattooed former barmaid) and others insisting that women wear the hijabs and marry only Muslim men. TLC doesn't mention, however, that the scale slides past the latter group of more conservative Muslims to Jihadists who believe that it is their religious duty to kill the infidel. And there are some of those radicals here. The problem is that we can't know how successful these radicals would be in convincing fellow Muslims that to be a devout Muslim, you have to be willing to kill the Christians. What I mean is this: in the first episode of "All-American Muslim," Jeff – a Catholic – converts to Islam so that he can marry Shadia. In spite of being a new Muslim, Jeff decides not to fast during the month of Ramadan because it makes him miserable and cranky. In last night's episode, as her family is discussing why Jeff is not fasting, Shadia tells her brother that Jeff's reason for conversion was so that he could be with her. At this point, Shadia's brother says, "you can't do that," it can't be for the wrong reason. He decides to confront Jeff and ask him whether or not he was serious about his conversion. He tells Jeff that he represents millions of Muslims and he must associate with them. What would happen if a cleric showed Shadia's brother the verses in the Koran which promote killing Jews and infidels and convinced him that, if he really wants to please Allah, he must be willing to be violent? Honestly, "All-American Muslim" could be a decent show if they told the whole story. It is just as important to realize that not all Muslims are terrorists as it is to accept that some of them are. This show just doesn't make that vital point and it never will, because it would not be politically correct.  It would, however, be factually correct.
