Subway: a sponsor of programming that degrades our families

In recent months we have lifted up the concern of Yum Brands and their frequent sponsorship of trash TV – in particular the Sunday evening Fox shows – Cleveland Show, Family Guy and American Dad.  Ignoring communications of those expressing concern, Yum Brands has continued to empower the lewd content of these shows. As we’ve monitored, however, we have also made note of another advertiser that is showing up time and time again as a sponsor of immorally-themed shows – Subway restaurants.  Subway is becoming a regular sponsor not only of the above-mentioned Fox shows, but also frequently advertises on shows such as Cougar Town, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, and others.  All of these shows undermine the family, promoting illicit sex, homosexuality, and crude language and themes.  In the first two weeks of May alone, of the 15 shows we regularly monitor which we have determined to be some of the worst on network television, Subway sponsored 9 of them.  And in April, Subway advertised on 11 of these 15 worst of the worst shows. Subway is the second-largest of the fast-food chains behind McDonald’s.  It has more than 31,000 locations in 90 countries and in the U.S., Subway has more locations than McDonald’s.  Nearly all Subway sandwich shops are franchised. Subway has marketed itself as a choice for healthy eating, yet empowers the trash that undermines the moral “healthâ€Â of the families they depend on for business. Urge Subway to place their advertising on programs that uplift, not destroy.  And stop into your local Subway franchise and let them know that as long as Subway advertising undermines your family, you won’t be patronizing their establishment.   Encourage the owner/manager to let the national office know that as a franchise, they and their customers do not appreciate the advertising decisions of corporate Subway.
