Some Thoughts on Independence Day

By: American Decency Staff

“The position of the Americans is quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one.â€Â These are the words of Alexis de Tocqueville in his book, Democracy in America, which he published in 1835 after a 4 year tour of our young country. De Tocqueville’s account of our country is an interesting study as it comes from the mind of a detached French social scientist, and paints an unbiased picture of culture in the early stages of our nation. With this quote, de Tocqueville introduced the idea of American exceptionalism – the idea that American has something that no other nation in the world has. Since Mr. de Tocqueville introduced the idea, it is probably worth looking at what it was that he thought made this country so special. Here is another de Tocqueville quote to give an idea of what that was. “The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other; and with them this conviction does not spring from that barren traditionary faith which seems to vegetate in the soul.â€Â In 1835, our society’s vibrant Christianity was what stood out to foreigners like de Tocqueville. That is a magnificent heritage to live up to! On the relationship of Christianity and America, our first president, George Washington, also had a strong opinion. Consider these words from his final orders at Valley Forge. "To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.â€Â And this quote from his farewell address in 1796: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensible supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.â€Â This Sunday we celebrate the birthday of our nation, Independence Day, and as history shows we owe our independence to no one more than to God. John Adams: “The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity.â€Â History also shows a heritage of thankfulness and devotion to God for the amazing blessing he has shown this land. Washington exemplified it. De Tocqueville testified to it. This July 4 is the perfect time to take up the mantle of our forefathers and thank God for the freedom he has blessed us with for so long – even when our society has rejected Him, cursed Him, and denounced Him. One more from John Adams: “This day ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.â€Â ================================ Your support is important to our ability to make a difference: donate online at:  https://secure4.afo.net/ada/donate.php American Decency Association Bill Johnson, President P.O.
