Glee – not fit for family viewing

By: American Decency Staff

The cultural waters our youth are swimming in are more than murky – a more apt description would be raw sewage.  It’s hard to think of even one television show geared to teens that offers positive examples. There is one wildly popular show watched by millions of teens, preteens, and adults, which, on the surface, would seem fairly innocuous.  The program is “Gleeâ€Â on the Fox Network.   Glee garners millions of viewers each week who tune in to watch this show of a mixed group of high-schoolers who are part of a modern-day glee club.  Each week a certain theme is introduced upon which the group plans a musical performance.  Interspersed with typical high school drama, are musical song-and-dance numbers fitting with the theme. It sounds rather harmless, right?  Think again.  Glee is about as far from a “Sound of Musicâ€Â or “Oklahomaâ€Â production as you can get.  Glee is edgy, erotic, and extremely popular with youth – both teens and preteens.  And that is why the show is especially concerning.  For mixed with the catchy vocal production numbers are sexualized themes and secular humanist propaganda indoctrinating viewers. Let me give you a brief look at several recent episodes of Glee to make my point.  The season premiere episode of Glee was the “Britney Spearsâ€Â episode.  If you know anything about Britney Spears’ illicit antics and lyrics, you can get the idea about this episode.  (This episode garnered Glee’s highest rating of all time – 13.3 million viewers.)  One song after another performed “Britney-esqueâ€Â with erotic gyrations, lyrics, and near-nudity.  Teen girls simulating sexual moves in bra and underwear or seemingly nude, opaque body suits; as well as performing in barely-there “school girl outfitsâ€Â fostering a sick image of pedophilia.  And that’s saying nothing about the provocative lyrics of the Britney songs performed.  One of the numbers performed before the student body induced a “sex riotâ€Â with students shouting:  “Yes!  Take it off!  Don’t stop doing that!â€ÂÂ  Of course the episode did nothing to show the negative consequences that come as a result of imitating Britney Spears. The episode also featured a boy masturbating in the school library and then being forced to sit naked before a female teacher and students’ sexual fantasies after receiving a dentist’s nitrous oxide gas. Another recent episode was entitled “Grilled Cheesus.â€ÂÂ  This episode supposedly “exploredâ€Â the concept of faith.  One student sees an image of Jesus on his burned grilled cheese sandwich.  This sets off countless sacrilegious references.  The student begins to pray to his sandwich – “grilled cheesusâ€Â – and finds a new belief in God when his prayers are seemingly answered – he prays that his girlfriend, who leads the celibacy club, will let him fondle her breasts and she does when they’re making out in his bedroom.  However, his new-found faith doesn’t last and by the end of the episode he is singing “Losing My Religion.â€Â The episode mocks God and Christianity and refers to God as “a jerkâ€Â and “an evil dwarf.â€ÂÂ  It also featured a sympathetic portrayal of a homosexual student who refuses to pray for his critically ill father, claiming he doesn’t believe in a God who “made him gay and made others so intolerant.â€Â And finally the most recent episode included a production of the bizarre and risqué “Rocky Horror Picture Showâ€Â complete with lyrics such as “Toucha, toucha toucha me, I want to be dirtyâ€Â and a transvestite dominatrix-like character.  The token Christian student volunteers to portray this character – to broaden her horizons.  The teacher who leads the glee club acknowledges Rocky Horror is inappropriate for teens, but states “it’s worth it,â€Â claiming art is all about “pushing the envelope.â€Â These few examples certainly should prove that “Gleeâ€Â is not fit for family viewing.  Yet millions, including Christian families, tune in each week!   And as they do, along with the catchy tunes, they are catching the immoral value system put forth by the creator of Glee. This is his agenda for our youth.  Glee creator, Ryan Murphy, has stated that his goal is to push the envelope until there is no restriction from explicit depictions of sex on network airwaves.  He stated:  “It’s tough to get that sexual point of view across on television.  Hopefully I have made it possible for somebody on broadcast television to do a rear-entry scene in three years.  Maybe that will be my legacy.â€Â That is what Glee creator is pushing for – a depiction of sodomy on network TV!  If nothing else has convinced you that statement alone should make it clear Glee is a show which should be opposed.
