ABC’s 2 new summer shows promoting the loving of evil instead of good

By: American Decency Staff

Sunday night ABC premiered two summer replacement shows – “Scoundrelsâ€Â and “The Gates.â€ÂÂ  The first is sleazy, the second, sickening.  Both are repulsive and neither is worth viewing.  However it is important to know what ABC is spewing across the airwaves, impacting the culture at large and as a result, you and me and our families. “Scoundrelsâ€Â is about a family whose “businessâ€Â is petty crime.  Oh, but they never use violence when robbing others so it’s all justified in their eyes – they have a “code of honorâ€Â.  The family of thieves is painted sympathetically as if they are martyrs being harassed by police. Besides the twisted moral views of right and wrong, ABC – as is common fare for this network – throws in a couple of raunchy sex scenes in hopes of drawing viewers.  In fact, the very first images of the show are of a very explicit bed scene.  It’s telling to note that the male actor originally hired to play this lead role was reportedly fired from the show in the early days of filming “for refusing to engage in heated love scenes with his co-star,â€Â as reported by the New York Daily News.  The original actor was Neal McDonough who reportedly is known in Hollywood as a Catholic family man who refuses to take part in sex scenes.  "It has cost him jobs, but the man is sticking to his principles," a source told Deadline.com. Instead of changing a scene that had no relevance to the storyline at all – other than to shock and titillate the audience – ABC just replaced him with another actor.  It shows what is truly important to the Disney Company (owners of ABC).  They would go through all the trouble of delaying filming and finding a new actor in order to keep this explicit scene. This episode also included a disturbingly graphic sex scene between a high school boy and a female teacher.  ABC is the network who pushed a show a few years ago “Life as We Know Itâ€Â about an ongoing sexual relationship between a minor and his teacher.  ABC has also used a similar storyline on their show “Desperate Housewives.â€ÂÂ  All of these portrayals suggested acceptance of sex between adults and minors, seemingly trying to break down societal and moral taboos.  Instead of condemning an abhorrent and illegal act, ABC portrays it as provocative and appealing. The second show premiering was “The Gates,â€Â a Desperate Housewives-esque show about a suburban community of soccer moms – and vampires.  This show also began with a seductive scene of adultery by a female vampire.  The scene ended with a truly gruesome and bloody murder. This show is attempting to ride the coattails of the disturbingly popular vampire frenzy that many of today’s teens (including Christian teens) are caught up in – thanks in large part to the “Twilightâ€Â books and movies phenomenon.  While that is an issue that deserves a much more thorough response, Christians should flee from dabbling with such wicked and unbiblical ideas.  Read Deuteronomy 18:9-12 to see what God says about such things.  ABC  is glorifying what God calls an abomination. Both of these shows promote the loving of evil instead of good (see Psalm 32:5).  Our response should be that found in Ephesians 5: 11 – “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.â€Â That is what we are striving to do – expose them – and that is what you can do by contacting the advertisers listed below and engaging those around you in discussion about choosing to be entertained by what builds up instead of destroys.
