Monday night ABC aired the premiere episode of a new sitcom, “Romantically Challengedâ€Â.   The show stars Alyssa Milano, the all-grown-up little girl from the 1980s sitcom, “Who’s the Boss?â€Â You remember the ‘80s, right? Back when there were TV shows you could actually watch with your family without having your child’s innocence ripped away. That certainly isn’t the case with “Romantically Challengedâ€Â – which might better be named, “Morally Challengedâ€Â. The good news is that, based on the scathing reviews for the poor writing, lame humor, and bad acting, “Romantically Challengedâ€Â may not last long. The bad news is that even a brief run will add further pollution to our already contaminated airwaves. Variety summed up the show with this apt description:  “a litany of tired, warmed-over sex jokes.â€Â The show is an offense from the get-go – mocking the existence of God and overt references to masturbation make up the opening scene. It only goes downhill from there. In addition to Milano’s character, a recently divorced mom, the cast includes two male friends in their mid-thirties. One of the main storylines revolves around one of these men dating a kindergarten teacher, who, he finds out on the first date, is into bondage sex – what he describes as “a little quirkâ€Â. The episode then centers on this theme of S&M and includes some of the most lewd and graphic dialogue I’ve ever heard on a network sitcom – promoting perverse acts and violence against women.  I was outraged to see how ABC/Disney fostered the obscene notion on which pornography is based that women supposedly like to be demeaned and abused. It’s hard to know how graphic we should be in describing this show. We want you to share our outrage about the lies being told and the damage being done to countless vulnerable ones. Therefore, without describing the scene, we’re listing some quotes from the show’s dialogue. Know that this verbiage is reinforced by the imagery shown. The scenes between the kindergarten teacher and the man she’s dating include these statements:
He later tells his friend: “I have to learn how to smack the crap out of her so she’ll love me.â€Â “Romantically Challengedâ€Â airs Monday at 9:30 pm following the reality show “Dancing with the Starsâ€Â – a show with a large female audience. I’m sure ABC hopes these female viewers will stay tuned for “Romantically Challenged.â€Â   Does ABC really expect to garner the respect of women by degrading them and fostering the sick view that somehow women enjoy being smacked?? Remember, this is the premiere episode when, one would think, the writers would want to capture the audience’s interest with catchy dialogue and witty humor. Instead “Romantically Challengedâ€Â takes viewers to the gutter – sending a sick message to susceptible men and boys and vulnerable girls and women that equates an act of love with degradation and violence.
