Last week an 89 year old senior saint came into our office  –  with earnestness she asked if we would help her launch a petition to the President of the United States. Anita stated that in 2009 President Obama had taken a low profile approach to the National Day of Prayer that has been favorably and nearly unanimously recognized by preceding U.S. Presidents. https://secure4.afo.net/ada/petition.php The petition is available via pdf at: https://americandecency.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/National-Day-of-Prayer-Petition.pdf This is confirmed by a CNN article: “For the past eight years, the White House recognized the National Day of Prayer with a service in the East Room, but this year (2009), President Obama decided against holding a public ceremony. …â€Â http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/06/obama.prayer/index.html This petition drive, to urge President Obama to publically observe and honor the National Day of Prayer, was appropriately launched yesterday out of a community that stands for life, nurture and family: The Baby Food Capitol of the World, Fremont, MI – home base of Gerber Baby Food! The petition drive was humbly and prayerfully launched at two churches .  God’s blessing was asked by Pastor Norm De Jong, pastor of Fremont (OPC) Orthodox Presbyterian Church. The idea for the petition was birthed by a woman just a few days short of her 90th birthday and written by a 20 year old young man.  Without God’s touch upon this humble but timely petition, it will be in vain. We are asking you to take ownership of it and with us to see this petition spread deep and wide starting today and through April 15 when we are asking that all copies of the petition be finalized and mailed into the White House. The petition is available via pdf at: https://americandecency.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/National-Day-of-Prayer-Petition.pdf The online petition can be found at: https://secure4.afo.net/ada/petition.php We will be giving regular reminders encouraging you to stand with us by (1) forwarding this petition on to your mailing list and email lists, (2) taking the petition to your church requesting your pastor to announce and to promote it, (3) make copies and urge friends and family to get signatures. The Petition reads as follows: To: The President of the United States, Barack Obama We, the undersigned, do encourage, promote, and request the President’s public observance of May 6, 2010 as the National Day of Prayer. Even as we recognize the President’s governance over citizens of every religion and of no religion, we adduce the examples of the First Continental Congress, Abraham Lincoln, and many past administrations in support of the propriety and recognized necessity of a public “day of humiliation, fasting and prayer.â€Â In light of the events of the past year which encompass every area of every life, from national security to the economy, we anticipate that the president will be an example of gratitude for the sustenance of our nation and reliance on God for the continued protection and advancement of our society. As this past year has been of particular political interest to both sides of the aisle, a day of unity in prayer and meditation for the state of this country can provide a welcome harmony and recognition of the need for divine direction.
