Today’s email alert is on an issue that may not deal with matters of decency, but is still of great importance to people of faith. The fundamental issue of the right to life is at play.  Somewhere in that list of God-given “unalienable rightsâ€Â we are being told there is a new one – a “rightâ€Â to government-run health care. Should we as Christians be concerned about the ill and those in need? Our Lord commands us to.  But should we pass off our obligation as the Body of Christ to the government, undermining the liberty God has also given at the same time? As you read this, our political leaders are on the cusp of controlling 16% of our economy, education loans, and the bodies and minds of millions of citizens, and, of great concern, the public funding of abortions. Legislation that basically overturns the Hyde amendment, will force each of us to do what is abhorrent – finance the taking of human life with our tax dollars. In spite of an overwhelming majority of opposition (two thirds of the citizens polled oppose it) and the restraint of the United States Constitution, President Obama and his cohorts are days away from tasting the most power ever imbibed in the name of the federal government.  And we are the only thing that stands between them and it. The good news is that they have weaknesses.  To preserve the metaphor, we can poke them in the eye and hope that they get the message and leave us alone. Many congressmen/women are undecided on this issue and many who are decided are uneasy about their decision.  Our best means of defense is, of course, prayer.  Our second line of defense is to do our best to pull our congressman off the fence and let them know that if they vote for this socialistic bill, their career is over.  Let them know that we, the people, do not want this. Some may say that socialistic is too strong of a word.  Well let’s look at how Merriam-Webster defines it: “any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.â€Â  Does that sound familiar?  The government has no money but what we give it, so when it subsidizes low income citizens that is a perfect example of Marx’s principle of spreading wealth.  Plus, the government will force all Americans, those whom the government decides can afford it, to buy a service that the people may or may not want and fine/ tax those who refuse.  That is one step away from the government deciding what care, if any, each person gets. We have lived in our comfortable little bubble for too long.  I fear that many of us believe that socialism can never come to America.  It is beyond our imagination. That, unfortunately, has played right into the hands of those who do move to bring it to our great nation.  If Socialism is ever fully realized in the U.S. it will be in this way. Piece by piece. Little bit by little bit. Quiet enough to do what they want without the sudden change that will let the people know exactly what is going on.
