Why would a woman, a mother, a wife, spend a dime on Cosmopolitan?

A quick look through the magazine reveals that it is predominantly advertisements.  Page after page of ads marketing colognes, lingerie, lipsticks,  eye shadows, vibrating mascara, etc..

October’s issue features 6 people in the nude.  No. You can’t see their private parts.  Yet, here they are 3 guys and 3 gals in the nude in an advertisement for D&G – the new fragrances by D&G.   Cosmopolitan is supposed to be a mainstream women’s magazine.

And even more concerning, this ad was placed on the back of the magazine cover, in full view of any impressionable ones who happen to pick up the magazine in the checkout lane.

So who or what is D&G.  Wikipedia states:

“… Dolce & Gabbana was publicly criticized by Britain’s advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in January 2007, for an advertising campaign showing models brandishing knives.

Following complaints from consumers’ groups in February 2007, Dolce & Gabbana pulled an advertisement in Madrid, Spain and Paris, France that showed a man holding a woman to the ground by her wrists while a group of men look on. Spain’s Labour and Social Affairs Ministry branded the campaign as illegal and humiliating to women, saying the woman’s body position had no relation to the products Dolce & Gabbana were trying to sell. Italian publications followed suit, banning the ad. …”

It is no surprise that Cosmopolitan aligns with the likes of D&G. Cosmo is a trashy magazine, featuring trashing articles and trashy photos. Why would a woman, a wife, spend a dime on Cosmopolitan?

Three action points:

(1) First, starting with you.  Rid yourself of Cosmopolitan in any and all forms whether it’s Cosmo Girl or Cosmopolitan. If you have any hanging around, get rid of them. Put them where they belong  – in the trash can.  If your daughter has copies of this trash, the urgency is even greater.  Do discuss this with caring and prayerfulness.  You need to explain the many obvious reasons why this magazine should not be a part of her life.

(2) Write D&G.  See contact information below.  Let them know that you are disgusted with the manner in which they have advertised elsewhere (see above) and how they are advertising in the October 2009 Cosmopolitan.

(3) Speak up for decency at the checkout counters.  You can still make a difference at your local Wal-Mart and grocery store if only you will.  Take a passionate, caring stand regularly until it’s at least gone from the checkout lane.

(4) Contact Cosmopolitan.  Express your disgust with their magazine cover, photos and articles.
