I believe in activism, but …

By: Steve Huston

billpickets03541Some of us have awareness of people whom we love and care about very much who were activists, seemingly fighting the fight of faith who suddenly came apart at the seams – losing their marriage, their children, their testimony for Christ.

It is vital that we keep first things first!

I Corinthians 13 rings out clearly today:

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

[I Corinthians 13]

I’m an activist. I’ve picketed sex shops, a county fair (by myself initially), K-Mart headquarters in Troy, MI, the state capitol, the Justice Department in Washington DC, Family Video (they use the name family and rent X-rated material), etc., etc.

I believe in activism.

As the protests continue in these days of societal discord and increasing division, the Christian must be Christlike – that He would be glorified in all things.

All things includes the way we speak, the words on the signs we choose to use, the manner in which we respond to counter protests or those who would verbally engage us, the tone we set in leading a protest or in participating in a protest.

This world is not our home. Indeed, we are pilgrims in a foreign land.

We are called to be the salt and light of the world – that His name would be glorified – that by our good works they may come to see Him and know Him personally.

Ultimately, on this earth, those pro-abortionists, the socialists, the pornographers, the statists may temporarily prevail though prayerfully not on our watch.

But whatever we say and do, we need to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus.

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
[Colossian 3:17]
