Hate Crimes at the local level and its opposition

By: Chris Johnson

Personal note:

I spent the morning yesterday in Lansing, Michigan at the House Office Building across the street from the State Capitol.

As stated in my Tuesday email alert, the Democrats are the majority party on the House side 67-43. The House Judiciary is controlled by the Democrats 9-6.

The most unfortunate point for me was the testimony of the Washtenaw County Prosecutor (Brian Mackie) who spoke (representing the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan) testifying in favor of the Hate Crimes legislation.

I’m finding it difficult to believe that the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan is supportive of this package of bills HB 4835 and 4836 as I have had multiple conversations with prosecutors over the years in regard to opposing obscenity.

I found Mr. Brian Mackie to be the most liberal prosecutor I had ever encountered and I have visited with prosecutors from Grand Rapids, Grand Haven, Muskegon, Detroit, Flint, Bay City, Mt. Pleasant, Kalamazoo, Saginaw and Ann Arbor, etc..

Mr. Mackie stated at our meeting in 1994 that if he served as prosecutor for the next 30 years that he would never bring a case against obscenity because it was basically frivolous (pornography was victimless and a waste of his time). What subjectivity! Isn’t this putting himself above the law?

Here were laws already on the books against obscenity and Mr. Mackie stated he wasn’t going to enforce it. This from the chief law enforcement agent in his county.

Now here he speaks representing the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan on the subject of Hate Crimes.

I urge you to contact Mr. Mike Cox, a board member of PAAM – Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan – see email below:
miag@michigan.gov

Mike Cox is not only a board member of PAAM but a past President of PAAM, a Republican and the Attorney General of the state of Michigan.

He needs to hear from people who care about law enforcement and not the propping up of legislation that will erode time honored standards of human civility and decency. Does this important piece of legislation reflect his position and that of PAAM? Truly?

In addition, this type of legislation will threaten the free speech of pastors, Sunday School teachers and anyone who teaches and preaches the Word of God and what it says about the sin of homosexuality, lesbianism, transvestism, pedophilia.

American Family Association’s, Gary Glenn(AFA of Michigan) did an outstanding job testifying in opposition to the bill. He was basically a lone voice.

The bill did pass the House Judiciary Committee. However, as I stated Tuesday, the Hate Crimes legislation will face opposition from Republicans in the Senate.
