Halls sexually suggestive ad between mother and youth

“What have we become as a culture?” was my first thought in viewing a television advertisement brought to my attention by one of my staff.  The ad aired during last night’s episode of ABC’s new show “Cougar Town” – the show’s premise centers around a 40 year old woman on the prowl to recapture her youth by having sex with young guys.   See Monday’s email alert for full analysis. http://www.americandecency.org/archives/abc%E2%80%99s-cougar-town-the-most-despicable-network-television-show-coming-out-this-fall/#more-1500

And within this despicable show, an equally despicable commercial aired for HALLS throat lozenges, following the same theme as “Cougar Town”.  How in the world do you eroticize a cough drop??  HALLS managed to do so.  The ad depicts a dowdy, middle-aged woman helping her son move into his college dorm room.  The son’s geeky roommate offers the mom a HALLS throat drop.  The two are shown standing inches apart, staring at each other as the camera focuses on their mouths moving in sexually suggestive ways while the voice-over shares their sexually suggestive thoughts.  The erotic moment is broken when her son and husband enter the room.

This show and Cadbury Adams, the company which owns HALLS, blatantly crosses the lines of decency, working to legitimize that which is repulsive.  I asked, “What have we become as a culture?”   We have become what we have tolerated.  As such depravity is accepted over the airwaves, more and more it permeates society impacting how people think and act.

Don’t remain passive while our culture becomes coarsened.   Contact HALLS and let them know that as long as they air such suggestive ads, their products will not be in your cupboards.
