In recent years it seems to have become a common practice among corporations to see who can stoop to the lowest level in producing the most vulgar Super Bowl ad. As this practice occurred, ADA began sounding the warning that the Super Bowl may not be safe to view for families and for those desiring to guard their heart from sexual imagery and themes. We also have helped hold accountable those corporations that push the envelope of taste and decency, informing you of the most offensive and urging you to contact those corporations that foist crudity upon us, showing no regard for the families viewing the Super Bowl.
We believe that as a result of public outcry, some of America’s corporations may finally be getting the message that vulgarity doesn’t sell. Last year’s Super Bowl ads were significantly toned downed and it was reported that the ads for Super Bowl 2009 would be as well. That, indeed, was the case with two notable exceptions. Doritos featured an ad entitled “Power of the Crunch” that showed a man walking down the street eating Doritos. As he crunched on a chip while walking by a woman on the sidewalk, her clothes flew off, leaving her only in provocative lingerie.
By far the worst advertising offender was once again the website and domain name host, GoDaddy.com. In the past several years, GoDaddy has produced some of the most vulgar and tasteless Super Bowl ads ever to air on network television. Last year, while other sponsors chose to advertise, for the most part, without explicit themes and images, GoDaddy continued the tired theme of eroticism – to the point that even the network censors disapproved of their ad.
GoDaddy seems to be slow learners. This year they aired two Super Bowl ads – each rife with sexual images and themes. The first, showed a college-age guy showing off his new website and domain to his friends, saying: “…now that I’m online it’s like I can make anything happen.” He then shows how he is manipulating images of a woman getting naked and showering. As his friends shout, “Awesome! Steamy!” One suggests, “Let’s add the German woman from the dean’s office.” And another image of a woman pops up with the other woman.
GoDaddy is basically telling guys that they can use GoDaddy’s services to make porn!
We urge you to contact GoDaddy and firmly tell them that you are outraged that they would subject you and your family to unwanted, pornographic themes during a family event and that you will not do business with GoDaddy.
