Fox’s “American Dad” – strong anti-patriotism on December 6 edition

Fox show – American Dad 12-06-09 I wrote last week about FOX’s disgusting Sunday night comedy, American Dad. Although last week’s episode was littered with sexual references and strippers, this week’s episode sought to offend a completely different audience. While the sexual undertone was still present, the main story line instead focused on the foolishness of all things military. Specifically, it targeted the Vietnam War. Now Vietnam was  a  controversial war in more ways than one, but the soldiers that fought there still do not deserve to be ridiculed and belittled. That is exactly what this show does. Our veterans' efforts in Vietnam, and their struggle to re-adapt to a post-war life are mocked and maligned. Along the way, further strains of anti-patriotism and anti-conservatism are thrown into the mix. The national anthem is disrespected, and the main character is portrayed as stupid for his high respect of veterans, and those who seek to remember the history of America’s wars through reenactments are also ridiculed. The final concern also happens to be the basis for the whole show. As in last week’s episode, the “American dadâ€Â is portrayed as a complete idiot, not in spite of, but because of his high values (which come and go depending on the episode). A reoccurring theme in this show, is that the father tries to control his children’s lives, because of his concern for them and desire for them to succeed. By the end of the show, he is proven wrong and proven to be an idiot. It is a belittling caricature of American family life.
