Cougar Town: Letter writing to Target needed!

By: American Decency Staff

cougarAs we continue to monitor a number of concerning shows on television, it is troubling to see what is flooding into millions of homes.   It is no wonder that our culture is in the state it is.  While what we see on TV is far from “artâ€Â, there is much truth in the adage, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.â€Â As vulgarity becomes the norm on television, vulgarity is heard and seen in all avenues of life – schools, shopping malls, the workplace and on and on. As sex saturates the airwaves, those around us are drawn into sexual temptation and sin. We as Christians can even find ourselves slowly becoming acclimated to our sin-soaked world.  In 2 Timothy 3, we read of the godlessness of the last days – lovers of self, of money, of pleasure.   In an old Bible that I used 25 years ago but is now falling apart, there is a note I wrote in the margin of this passage from 2 Timothy  – “This is now.â€ÂÂ  If that description was true then, how much more so it is today.  What was shocking in the 1980s is no longer. That is what we are seeing today.  And as long as we tolerate it – become acclimated – it will only worsen.  Only when the light shines will darkness dissipate.    That is what we should be about – shining our light on the darkness.  That is what we attempt to do when we bring concerning television shows to your attention – not only to help you know what to avoid, but also to give you opportunity to be salt and light. One of the many shows we’re tracking is ABC’s “Cougar Townâ€Â starring Courtney Cox. The theme of each episode is one sleazy sexual scenario after another.  The first episode set the premise of the show – a middle-age woman seeking sex with young guys.  As she brings a young man home with her for sex, her friend tells her – “Go do disgusting things to that boy.â€ÂÂ  The most recent episode revolved around a homemade pornographic sex tape which influenced her friends to make a sex tape of their own.  As expected, the show was filled with explicit sexual references and crudities. As we acclimated to the TV content of the 1980s, if we tolerate the above filth, that too will become normative.  Help us to shed light.  Below is a listing of advertisers from “Cougar Townâ€Â.  We urge you to let them know that as long as they sponsor such trash, they will not receive your business.
