Britany Spears on the cover of Kohls catalog

By: Chris Johnson

What is Kohl’s doing featuring Britney Spears?

We received a sales catalog recently for Kohl’s 3-Day Easter Sale. On the front of the cover was a picture of Britany Spears. Though in all fairness to Kohls, Britney Spears was not dressed inappropriately.

Nonetheless, the question does need to be raised:

Is Britney Spears a role model for our young people? Doesn’t Kohls take that into consideration?

One person wrote and I believe that it represents the thinking of many concerned parents of young women:

The negative message that I see Britney sending to today’s teens is that the only way to be successful in life or your career is to dress up like a slut to impress men. She is not a positive image but a degrading one.

We are all equal – men and women, so why should women have to go about life pleasing them.

Britney is like the movie Evita, that to get to the top, you have to be used by males.

Whether we like it or not, we are all role models, so I believe we should set a good example for younger kids, not a bad one as I see Britney doing.

In addition, I received an email from a concerned shopper from the Las Vegas, NV area who wrote:

Bill, I decided that I wasn’t going to wait for someone else to protest this I did it myself. We all need to protect ourselves and our families instead of depending on you and organizations like yours to stand up for decency. Let me know what you think about what I wrote. Thanks and God bless.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have shopped and enjoyed my shopping experience with Kohl’s several times in several of your stores. However, I was extremely disappointed when I received the soft-porn catalog which I am returning with this letter. If you are resorting to this type of advertising to sell your product you are apparently looking for a different type clientele.

Twenty-four pages of underwear clad women in all manner of suggestive poses is not the advertising I expect to receive in my mail.

There is no discount, including 100%, that will entice me to spend my money at a store that promotes this soft-porn advertising.
Must I now be afraid to ask a friend’s child to run in and get my mail for me? Can I no longer leave my mail, from Kohl’s, lying on a counter or table in my home for fear a child might see it and after having their curiousity aroused they might want to search for and see more? Children are very impressionable and extremely curious. Many people are lead step by step into full blown addictions from seemingly minor incidents of exposure.

The destruction of our sensibilities starts very slowly and subtly until gradually the eyes gloss over and the brain no longer recognizes the assault of indecent material. We have seen this happen in the entertainment industry. What started out as a comedy situation that caused people to snicker in an embarrassed way gradually expanded until much in the industry has become abhorrent. Must our homes now be invaded by this type of sales materials from a department store?

Have you considered how harmful this type of advertising can be? What would be your response if your catalog made it’s way into the home of a struggling pornography addict and that triggered them to act out their addiction. Alcoholics and drug addicts must stay completely free from their addictive triggers. This is true of pornography addictions as well. Why would you want to be a part of exposing them to this potential danger? Why would you risk your reputation in this manner?

I have not been in one of your stores since before the date of this catalog promotion so I can only wonder what might have been on display there.

Please respond in writing to my concerns and let me know what you will do in regards to this matter.
Sincerely,

B.H.
Logandale, Nv

Editor’s note: B.H. followed up her email to me with this recent email update.

Bill, To date I have heard nothing, but I did send it snail mail and they may be taking a while to get to it. I will allow 2 weeks, which would be April 7 and then I will figure they probably just file 13’d my letter.

I thought my next step would be to take my Kohls charge card into the store, speak to the manager and explain why I was closing the account.

I probably won’t be in Vegas the nearest Kohls until around the 15th of April. So that will have given them even more time to respond. …

God’s blessings to you, Betty

Good for Betty.

Keep standing Betty! It’s important that we all stand up at those times where it is clear someone needs to be a voice for His righteousness and for our children and children’s children.

We can still make a difference and hold back the smut at places like Kohl’s if only we will.
