American Dad (Nov.29) – Shame on the Advertisers – Let Them Know

By: American Decency Staff

americandadIn the world of stand up comedy, ventriloquists know that while they could not deliver a questionable punch line themselves; if they do it through their puppet, they can often get away with it. In shows like American Dad and Family Guy, FOX tries to pull the same trick.Let’s imagine some of the antics from the most recent American Dad episode on a live-action sitcom. Although opposition would not be as strong as it should be, a non-animated TV show where the CIA director brings his agents to a strip club to spend a budget surplus, the same director has strippers beat his genitals for a sexual high, the main character’s son watches strippers live on webcam, and a father (accidentally) strips for his 18 year old daughter would simply not be allowed on television. Of course these are only some of the travesties I recorded and these are from only one episode. In this program, the main character works for the CIA. He is portrayed as a patriot and a conservative who is proud of service for his country. He is of course ridiculed for this. In this episode, he is upset because his daughter ignores his advice on what kind of business to start, so when his boss hauls him to a strip club (against his will) he refuses a lap dance from a stripper and offers to set her up in a dry cleaning business to prove to his daughter that he was right. Not only is this idea obviously another cliché portrayal of men as idiots, he is mocked for not allowing the woman to strip for him. After setting up five strippers (who are portrayed as happy morons) in a dry cleaning business and allowing them to stay in his son’s room (his son is at space camp), he realizes that he sunk all his money in the new business. While the son and his friends watches the strippers undressing and kissing in his room at home via webcam, the father is roped into stripping to pay his bills. The next day, the daughter, unaware of her father’s new side job, goes to the strip club to “cheer up.â€Â The predictable “punch lineâ€Â of the show occurs when the father comes out on stage and begins to strip with his daughter in the audience. Later that night, the son and his friends return, having escaped their boring space camp in hopes of seeing the strippers at the house. The strippers have all left, but their random alien guest gives them a g-string that they left behind. The boys all begin to smell it before they are told it is the boy’s fathers. On top of the disgusting sexual references, the show continues Family Guy’s and The Simpson’s tradition of degrading fatherhood and male intelligence; morality and patriotism are viewed as cute and old fashioned; and conservatism is ridiculed. In short, American Dad is a show that no American dad should watch or let his family watch.
