A Stark Contrast

By: American Decency Staff

accidently on purposeEach month a group of the loveliest people gathers at our building.  These lovely ones may have a few wrinkles, some are stooped over or walk with a cane, but to us they are beautiful.  Their beauty comes from the light of Christ shining through them.   They are our volunteers who gather each month to assemble our newsletters for mailing.  They live not for themselves, but for the Lord and the tremendous, faithful help they bring to us is only one example of lives poured out for the Kingdom. Last evening we hosted an appreciation dinner to offer a humble thanks for all they do and for all they mean to us.  It is always a rich pleasure to spend time with these dear saints, nearly all in their seventies and eighties, some in their nineties. Today, however, it is back to the mission of ADA.  Following the sweet savor of last evening, is the stench of the world as we take time to catch up on television monitoring. We’ve written before about the CBS program “Accidentally on Purposeâ€Â – a show about a woman in her late thirties who has a one-night stand with a 22 year old stranger and ends up pregnant.  We’ve described the vulgarity of the show – the constant flood of sexual scenes, crudity, and lewd dialogue.  I could write paragraphs documenting  a host of explicit examples of indecency. However, there is just one example that I’ll comment on today.  A scene that is in striking contrast to our time last evening with our band of volunteers. During Monday’s episode of “Accidentally on Purposeâ€Â in the midst of crude discussions of bikini waxes, urination, and jokes about incest, one character states the “two simple rulesâ€Â he lives by.  The first is to avoid fights.  The second rule of life, as he vulgarly states, is to “have as many orgasms as possible.â€ÂÂ  He goes on to say, “And anyone who’s doing anything else is doing it wrong.  ‘Cause at the end of the day, we’re really all alone.  You gotta look out for number one.â€Â What a pathetic example that typifies what we see not only on this show, but dozens of others.  This is the life lesson taught to millions who tune in to watch and is then lived out around us.  An industry and a culture living for nothing other than their own carnal nature.  “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.â€ÂÂ  Romans 8:5 Last evening we were in the company of those who’ve set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  Who live not to please themselves, but to give themselves away.  What a stark contrast to the filth of shows such as “Accidentally on Purposeâ€Â. Listed below are the advertisers who sponsor the lewd content of this show.  These corporations seem to have no qualms about associating their names with dialog so vulgar I hesitate to list it.  The examples above should suffice.  Please contact the advertisers, letting them know that as a consumer you will not support companies that undermine your values. Three companies who cater to families are becoming consistent, regular sponsors of “Accidentally on Purposeâ€Â – Campbells’ soup, McDonald’s and Wal-Mart – each having advertised multiple times over several weeks.
