Will the Victoria’s Secret “fashion show” be toned down?

By: Steve Huston

A look back at last year’s Victoria’s Secret “Fashion Show.”

Here, in part, is what we stated regarding last years “flesh fest.”

The ‘flesh fest’ that aired last night (12.04.07) on CBS, otherwise known as Victoria’s Secret “Fashion Show”, had little to do with fashion, but a lot to do with flesh. The hour-long promotion of Victoria’s Secret was an endless parade of erotically clad models in barely there lingerie. With very little covered up by the skimpiest of underwear, cameras gave an up-close and personal view of every erotic display of cleavage and bare skin. As CNN reported: “It might be too much to devote an hour of prime-time television to long legs, taut tummies and half-bare bottoms and bosoms. So the Victoria’s Secret fashion show incorporates elaborate staging and musical performances. …”

By now you are aware of Victoria Secret’s comments from this past year expressing their need to tone down.

Quoting from our email alert from February 28, 2008:

“… The chief executive of the Victoria’s Secret lingerie chain — known for its provocative, televised fashion shows and eye-popping stores — admitted something shocking Thursday morning: The brand has become ‘too sexy.’

‘We have so much gotten off our heritage,’ said Sharen Turney, chief executive of Victoria’s Secret, during an analyst call with investors.

We use the word ‘sexy’ a lot and have gotten off ‘ultra-feminine’, said Ms. Turney, explaining that she wants to bring more-sophisticated, higher-quality products back to Victoria’s Secret stores. …”

ADA comment from 2007:

In past years we have seen corporations such as McDonalds, Chili’s, Target and several car companies advertise. However, other than the 8 ads Victoria’s Secret itself ran and the 9 ads from movie companies, this year the list of major corporations was quite limited. However, we of course still urge you to contact the corporations who did sponsor this indecent display. We truly believe that as a result of letters of concern in past years, advertisers are staying away. Your voice is needed!

ADA will monitor tomorrow night’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to determine whether or not VS will keep their word and tone down the eroticism. Look for a report and list of advertisers on Thursday.
