Disgusted with Dannon

By: Steve Huston

Dannon’s double talk. Will you purchase Dannon products?
We won’t be.

Dannon’s has been advertising on CBS’s show “Swingtown.”
As we stated here last week “… My heart is heavy over what once again aired last night on CBS’ new summer program, ‘Swingtown’. Repugnant, repulsive, depraved, destructive. My thesaurus doesn’t have the words to describe.

In case you missed our earlier analysis of ‘Swingtown’, this is a show where the entire premise is bent on legitimizing ‘open marriage’ and group sex. The message propagated over and over is that ‘everyone’ has an open marriage – it isn’t adultery – it will improve one’s marriage. …”

Well, Dannon has been advertising since the first episode aired several weeks. Numbers of you wrote to Dannon letting them know of the damaging nature of this Thursday night program. Dannon’s response letter indicated that they were acknowledging an error and that they would be pulling their ads.

Isn’t that what it sounds like to you? Here’s a portion of their letter:

“… I can assure you we share your concerns about the quality and appropriateness of programming. We do all that we can to ensure that it meets Dannon standards.

As you may know, companies like Dannon typically purchase advertising ‘rotations’ throughout a network’s or station’s scheduled programming. And although we work diligently through our advertising agency to avoid inappropriate programming, on occasion our safeguards are inadequate. For us, that is an indication that we must redouble our efforts in this regard, and we will.

We are committed to participating in programs that reflect the high quality of our products. That is our directive to our advertising agency, and it is not negotiable. …”

As it stands, then, several weeks have gone by. Dannon’s ad keeps appearing. You and I keep writing and they keep giving us the same
disingenuous letter each and every time.

If we don’t hold them accountable, who will?
Can you writing such a letter to a person who
is a customer of yours? I can’t!!!!

Here’s what one person wrote to Dannon:

Dear … ,

Although I appreciate the fact that corporations may not always know where their advertising dollars will “land,” I believe that you have a moral obligation to find out. If I invest in a mutual fund, and discover that my dollars are being used to buy stock in a company with illegal or immoral business practices, I find myself duty-bound to remove my money from that fund.

Furthermore, I read your carefully-crafted letter once before. It was posted last week on AmericanDecency.org, in response to someone else’s letter. Your company, however, advertised on Swingtown again, after your response was posted. Upon re-reading your letter, I see no assurance that Dannon is removing their money from the Swingtown ads. I see only that Dannon attempts to buy ads on programs that reflect the quality of their product.

Should Dannon continue to advertise on Swingtown, I will have to assume that Dannon considers the content and quality of this program to reflect the quality of your yogurt.

Sincerely,
