*** The individual battle for holiness *** An interview with the University of Texas – Pan American "Study: Porn more accepted among students" *** Personal noteThe individual battle for holiness begins right at home. Below a young mother shares her heart about this battle. Bill, Just wanted to inform you of a disturbing commercial I saw on the hospital television while waiting in the recovery room with … . I wrote down the television channel and details so I wouldn't forget. ABC Family at 2:50 Chicago time during the show "Full House" An Arby's commercial showing a young woman and man sitting on a blanket in the evening. The gal said something like "let's go for a dip" and then ran ahead and as she was nearing the water she took her top off, exposing all of her bare back and dove into the water. The man ran the other way for Arby's, a dip sandwich of some sort, and the gal was shown again, from the front, waiting in the water in her "birthday suit" wondering where he went. It makes me sick to see how so many businesses sell sex instead of their product. It causes [us] to protect our daughters more and more, and raise them to truly know that purity is of God – and all a part of His holiness. Being that we don't have our television on in our home, not even for the news, we are grateful to be informed of the society we live in by American Decency Association – even though it sickens us to be informed, we are thankful for your ministry and pray for you often. Standing Firm In Christ, [name withheld by ADA] ================ An interview with the University of Texas – Pan American http://www.utpa.edu/dept/panamerican/dsp_article.cfm?articleID=361 Study: Porn more accepted among students by Ana Villarrutia "… Johnson and the ADA believe porn can lead to sexually active behavior, violent behavior and an increase in STDs. 'Young couples are getting ideas from porn videos… men can become inflamed by what they see and (women) can become an object.' He added that watching porn could precede incidents such as rape. Johnson remembers an incident that happened in the greater Detroit area of a young woman he came to know. 'There was a situation of a young college gal who was going to a party with a fraternity guy who had just watched a porn movie,' he said. 'She thought she was ‘OK’ and then he took her to a corn field where he raped her.' The study also indicates that porn users are generally linked to 'risky behaviors' like binge drinking and are more likely to have sex with multiple partners. However, these suggestions have yet to be empirically substantiated." The Student Newspaper of The University of Texas-Pan American Personal note: I was still a novice in my work in this ministry when I attended a hearing in Macomb County (Sterling Heights, MI) near Detroit. The hearing was before the Macomb County Commissioners. With restraint and cautious humility, the young former coed shared her tragic account. She had believed that pornography was victimless. If young men wanted to view pornography that was their decision. This view was to be altered dramatically. Her sorority and a particular fraternity engaged in occassional socials together. She was asked by a fraternity brother to attend a dinner at a nearby restaurant that the sorority and fraternity were participating in together. She met the "fraternity brother" at his fraternity house and as she walked through the halls she noted that her date for the evening was gathered together with several others watching an XXX-rated movie. She also noted there was an aggressive sexual act being exerted upon a woman in the movie just as she was coming in the door. Moments later her date accompanied her out to the car and shortly thereafter she could see that he wasn't heading toward the social function but rather toward the country. What transpired was that the young man forcefully took her out of the car into a corn field where he raped her. Her account before the county commissioners was that this young man was fueled by what he saw. He was stirred. The imagery that he viewed ignited a desire to act out what he saw. I have spoken with this lady in years past. There is no doubt that it occurred. Her innocence and purity were violated that day. Her view that pornography is victimless was altered never to be changed. She praises God that she has a truly Christian marriage where she is honored, regarded, treasured, loved and healing.Lastly: It is a complex battle – this battle for personal purity. How refreshing to know that there are young parents fighting for the hearts, souls, minds and purity for their young ones. Father God: Help all of us to fight the fight of faith for holiness beginning with ourselves and our loved ones. Ignite our love for You that we will love you so much that we will hunger and thirst for Your righteousness – that we would be more and more like you – holy for You are Holy. =================================== And, yes, we still are making the offer available the book "The Pursuit of Holiness". The author Jerry Bridges states it this way: "The Christian plumber and the Christian banker and the unsung homemaker and the powerful head of state are all alike called to be holy." "… But God has not called us to be like those around us. He has called us to be like Himself. Holiness is nothing less than conformity to the character of God." This book is a tremendous study. The chapters are concise and meaty but readable. The little book has study questions for each chapter. A tremendous way to study over a period of time God's great plan for our lives – I urge the reading and study of this book for yourself. And beyond that, I encourage you to bring together a group of people – young and/or old – and study and strive together to engage in this life long pursuit – "to be holy for He is holy."
