A&F: Is this really necessary?

By: American Decency Staff

In earlier years, we have often raised concerns about Abercrombie & Fitch. Between the early months of 2000 through December 2003, Abercrombie & Fitch was one of American Decency Association's major targets. ADA was concerned with A&F's scheme of producing and distributing a pornographic catalog to youth. This concern coupled with A&F's utilization of erotic wall and window displays led ADA into leading, what turned out to be, a successful national campaign to pressure A&F to discontinue using pornography to draw youthful shoppers. Recently, however, A&F has returned to its pornographic ways using a display at the very entrance of the A&F outlet of a male exposing partial rear nudity. This image (below) is displayed at the Rivertown Crossing Mall (Grandville, MI)and is a property of General Growth Properties, Chicago, IL. https://americandecency.org/main.php?f=updates_new/2008/January/01.18a.08 Sample letter: Dear Mr. Bucksbaum: Thank you for your efforts in the past to tone down both Victoria's Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch displays which even you have admitted at times crosses the line. As you well know, mall shoppers don't find much satisfaction in speaking directly to A&F or Victoria's Secret (either at the local store or at the corporate level). Therefore we turn to the owner of the mall that rents the space. We know that General Growth is the second largest renter of mall space in America. That's why many of us turn to you and will continue to do so. You rent the space that permits them to exist and display such imagery. This time its Abercrombie & Fitch displaying a male with his pants partially down exhibiting partial rear nudity at the very entrance of the A&F outlet. I encourage you to urge A&F to replace this inappropriate display with one which is appropriate for a shopping public that includes all ages.
