Personal note: It's an encouragement to see individuals step up, speak up – going against all odds. Sometimes their efforts make a difference. Sometimes they don't. Whatever, it encourages you, too, as people don't succumb to the sense of hopelessness, impossibility, road blocks, a letter from a law office. They/we prayerfully stand up – because it's the right thing to do. May this be a tap on our shoulder!*** Yesterday I received a call from a lady concerned about what Spencers Gifts is marketing in her mall and in many malls – presumably. She wrote (I'm keeping her name anonymous). Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. The mall is Stratford Square Mall located at 152 Stratford Square, Bloomingale, Illinois 60108. The store I'm referring to is Spencer Gifts. The things I saw there that set me on this path are as follows – sex toys such as vibrators and dildos, sexual games, sex lubes and gels, pornographic greeting cards, key chains with little bears in sexual bondage poses and costumes, and sex gag gifs that are explicit in nature like pasta shaped like genitals, genital shaped stir sticks, genital shaped plastic balloons etc. This stuff is some of the first stuff you see when you walk in. They used to keep it hidden in the back of the store, but it has taken over this particular location. The store is always packed with young teens that should not have exposure to this kind of stuff. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. ADA response: I'm seeking legal answers to assist her in what she can expect. A main question for me is can they sell dildos, and the like in a shopping mall store in a public shopping mall? If they can, then we are in a similar position as we are with Victoria's Secret, Abercrombie. *** A woman picks up the phone and calls TV station upon seeing an offensive ad – may this be a tap on our shoulders — On Tuesday, February 12, 2008 around 4:20 PM, J.S. turned on Wood-TV 8 to see if her Bible Study was cancelled due to bad weather. What she saw was startling. There was a commercial that showed couples embracing and then they would show clothes on the floor and then shoot back to the couple and then you would see other images. The commercial was for K-Y Jelly Lubricant (Johnson & Johnson). She was appalled that they were showing an adult commercial during the afternoon when most adults are working and the majority of the people watching television are children and teens. She contacted Wood-TV 8 immediately and left a message for Mr. Corbus and expressed her concerns. She then contacted us at ADA office. On Thursday, February 14, 2008, J.S. received a phone call from Mr. Corbus. He explained that “People’s Courtâ€Â is a syndicated show and that they have the contract with K-Y Jelly so they are making the money not Wood-TV 8. In addition, J.S. gave a great effort to help Mr. Corbus understand every aspect of the concern. In addition, she offered to give him a copy of “Sex Has a Price Tagâ€Â for him to view and hopefully to show it to his children. ADA COMMENT: Thank you J.S. for not just letting it pass. Undoubtedly many others were disgusted by this ad – even more so by its timing in the afternoon. ============= WHAT ABOUT ADA? For your information, three days ago we sent a letter to 83 mall stores in a local mall near us. In response to our letter which expressed our concerns and included eight pictures of concerning displays exhibited by Victoria's Secret, we received a letter from the attorney offices representing this particular mall.
