“Swingtown”: CBS launches one of the worst …

By: Steve Huston

"… You may say, 'I agree, this is disturbing, but it doesn’t affect me. I would never choose to watch such a program.'…â€Â June 10, 2008 Last Thursday CBS premiered a new summer program, “Swingtownâ€Â which is being touted by the network as “intriguing, summer funâ€Â.There is nothing “funâ€Â about the show – rather it is repugnant and destructive and one of the worst, if not the worst, we’ve seen on network television. “Swingtownâ€Â, set in 1976, portrays “open marriageâ€Â and group sex as not only commonplace, but also as a boost for marital intimacy. And it ignores the facts regarding the addictive, damaging impact of pornography and gives the message that porn use, even by young boys, is no big deal. The show opens with Tom, a married commercial pilot, bringing home a young stewardess to engage in group sex with his wife, Trina. The three are shown in bed together, as he has sex with the stewardess. Another scene is of two boys approximately 13 years old. One of the boys finds a large box of his father’s porn magazines in the basement and they are shown ogling copies of Penthouse. When the father catches them with a magazine, he simply tells his son and the son’s friend, “Don’t let your mother catch you with this. She’ll have a coronary on the spot.â€Â He then proceeds to hand the magazine back to his young son with a pat on the head. Later in the episode Tom and Trina host a wild 4th of July party. At the party there’s open drug use and an orgy in the basement “playroomâ€Â showing a man with several women having sex. Tom and Trina want to persuade Susan and Bruce, their new straight-laced neighbors, to join in. Bruce is told by a partygoer he can get him a membership to the Playboy Club and can get him a girl. At one point, as perverse sexual themes are alluded to during this Independence Day party, partygoers are singing the National Anthem in the background. And then, note the following dialogue between Trina and Susan. After interrupting a partygoer snorting cocaine, Trina tells Susan: “She’s harmless. Miserable, but harmless. I keep saying they should just open their marriage like everyone else, but her husband is a little uptight.â€Â Susan: “You and Tom have an open marriage?â€Â Trina: “Well, don’t you?â€Â Susan: “No, no, Bruce would go ape if I cheated on him.â€Â Trina: “Oh, it’s not cheating. It’s the opposite, actually.â€Â Susan: “How is having sex with other people not cheating?â€Â Trina: “Well, because everything’s already on the table. There’s no sneaking around, no lies. Ever since we got into it, Tom and I have reached this whole other level of intimacy. Not to mention the great sex. … Opening our relationship was the best thing that ever happened to me and Tom.â€Â Did you take notice of what is being promoted here?? “Everyoneâ€Â has an open marriage. Having sex with other people is not cheating – it will increase intimacy – it’s the “bestâ€Â thing that could happen to a marriage. This concept is reiterated positively throughout the episode and no negative or harmful consequences are shown. In an extremely disturbing erotic scene where Tom and Trina lead conservative Bruce and Susan into group sex, Bruce is shown obviously uncomfortable with having another man intimately touch his wife, yet he soon happily joins in. And the next day Bruce and his wife Susan are shown after seemingly having had “great sexâ€Â, validating the sick and twisted premise that an “open marriageâ€Â fosters intimacy. The scripture verse of Isaiah 5:20 comes to mind: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.â€Â You may say, “I agree, this is disturbing, but it doesn’t affect me. I would never choose to watch such a program.â€Â Hopefully everyone reading this would also say they’d never choose to watch “Swingtownâ€Â. After all, another scripture verse tells us to “… have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness …â€Â Yet the verse doesn’t end there. Ephesians 5:11 goes on to say “… but rather reprove them.â€Â We may never watch such perversion, but it does affect you and it does affect me. It affects the cultural climate we and our loved ones live in. It attacks the God-ordained institution of marriage and attempts to legitimize ideas and behaviors that will destroy lives and families and what’s left of a societal moral conscience. If we put our collective heads in the sand, ignoring the darkness without reproving it, we shouldn’t be surprised as more and more people around us call evil, good. What happens when the salt loses its savor? Recently I heard my friend Don Wildmon of American Family Association speak about the court decision in California legalizing gay ‘marriage’ and the rapid snowball effect we’re already seeing in other states as a result. He lamented, “Where is the Church?â€Â and prophetically questioned where we will be if pulpits and Christians remain silent while God’s Truth is attacked by a tiny, but vocal, minority. Where is the Church? Will we Christians speak out with righteous indignation as Hollywood tries to convince those around us that group sex is ‘good’ for marriages?
