“Why do you always look the other way ….”

By: American Decency Staff

“Why do you always look the other way while when you walk by the marquee?” Rev. David R. Mains former director of the Chapel of the Air, Wheaton, Illinois once related the following in regard to fighting impurity. A young colleague remarked to David when he worked at a church in downtown Chicago “Why do you always look the other way when you walk by the marquee?” He was referring to a strip club marquee with the accompanying seductive images used to lure vulnerable ones. David’s response was that he learned that by not placing seductive things before his eyes he strengthened himself against temptation. I heard those word during my thirties. I never forgot those words and was strengthened by them. I once struggled with pornography. I began to see that as I kept myself away from concerning television programming, magazines, movies, etc. that my thought life became strengthened against lustful thoughts. Increasingly, I had a great recognition of the harm, damage and destruction that Satan was doing with pornography and indecency. I hate the works of darkness. It’s my desire – first – that I not succumb to it – nor others – people I love and care about – all humankind. Myspace.com? Christ makes it abundantly clear Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matt 5:27-28 Pornography destroys. But first – it desensitizes a person to little by little accept and accommodate to the point of losing indignation against that which is pornographic. Why is there so little indignation today? The answer is clear. How can a person say they love the Lord and yet carelessly and casually put themselves in situations where their moral sensibilities will be compromised? How many people reading this email have been damaged by pornography? Prayer: Father God help us to turn away from that which is displeasing and dishonoring to you; to pursue holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. [Heb. 12:14] To be men and women whose thought life is clear and pure; totally faithful to our mates. In Christ’s name. Amen. Our July bulletin insert Oh that many churches would make this information available to their people that moms and dads and their children would be urged to seek “higher ground” and not give place for Satan.
