Victoria’s Secret uses laborers in sweat shops according to article in Columbus Dispatch

By: American Decency Staff

I received this email from a person writing about Victoria's Secret and their lingerie which is made in sweat shops. HERE'S WHAT SHE WROTE: Not only is VS 'fashion show' a slap in the face to all decent folks…..it should be more widely reported that their lingerie is made in sweat shops – by pretty much enslaved workers….those who had passports had them taken away by the sweat shop owners….they are worked 14-18hours/day – and live in disgusting conditions….since their passports were taken from them, they cannot escape! THAT should be widely broadcast! I ASKED FOR VERIFICATION. HER RESPONSE WAS AS FOLLOWS: I'll try to find it for you….Bill O'Reilly did a part of his show on this…there was a guy on there who actually has been to the sweat shop where VS lingerie is made, Let me see what I can find out! SHE DID FIND IT. Columbus Dispatch link ==================================== SHE WROTE THE FOLLOWING: "…I believe this is the link on which O'Reilly based the show segment, since I found a link to this from O'Reilly Archives. "IF this is true, this is even more ammunition against this company – I would not regret seeing them shut down! When they first started, they were not as sex-oriented – it seemed to me, at the time, that they just carried very nice lingerie – windows were always acceptable – but not anymore! They are now going along with the pack in trying to sexualize our youth! America is starting to look like Rome did – before the Roman Empire fell!" HERE IS A PORTION OF THE TEXT FROM THE LINK ABOVE: Group alleges abuses at apparel factory Wednesday, November 28, 2007 6:38 AM By Amy Saunders THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH "… According to the report released yesterday, workers said they've been producing Victoria's Secret merchandise for a year, working up to 96 hours per week without overtime pay and being subjected to slapping or beating for making mistakes or missing production goals. When factory managers increased the workload last month — requiring each worker to sew one garment about every three minutes — some employees protested, saying such demands were impossible to fulfill, the report said. Six of them were then jailed, prompting the remainder of the factory's 150 workers to go on strike Nov. 12, according to the group, which also said the factory's owner is threatening to deport the workers back to their homes in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
