The VS ‘flesh fest’

By: American Decency Staff

The ‘flesh fest’ that aired last night on CBS, otherwise known as Victoria’s Secret “Fashion Showâ€Â, had little to do with fashion, but a lot to do with flesh. The hour-long promotion of Victoria’s Secret was an endless parade of erotically clad models in barely there lingerie. With very little covered up by the skimpiest of underwear, cameras gave an up-close and personal view of every erotic display of cleavage and bare skin. As CNN reported: “It might be too much to devote an hour of prime-time television to long legs, taut tummies and half-bare bottoms and bosoms. So the Victoria’s Secret fashion show incorporates elaborate staging and musical performances.â€Â In addition to the highly charged sexual imagery, Victoria’s Secret had their public relations in full gear as well, trying to equate their erotic display with everyday life. The show started out with model Heidi Klum talking about being a working mom and showing her with her baby. Other models were showcased as well – commenting on their charity work, showing pictures from their childhood as cute, wholesome little girls. But the real meaning of the show is revealed by this quote from model Heidi Klum: “It’s dreamland fantasy: sex-goddesses wearing amazing lingerie …â€Â And from the expressions of lust on the men’s faces in the audience as the camera focused on them, sex is what was on their minds. The show ended with a slap-in-the-face to Christianity with the insulting display of a supposed church choir decked out in choir robes singing “Hallelujahâ€Â as the models paraded down the runway. As Victoria’s Secret pulled out all the stops to foist sexual imagery over the airwaves, as we reported yesterday, we are at least encouraged that “overall viewership has declined each year, from more than 9 million in 2002 to … 6.5 million last year.â€Â We also have found that most mainline advertisers chose not to sponsor the show. In past years we have seen corporations such as McDonalds, Chili’s, Target and several car companies advertise. However, other than the 8 ads Victoria’s Secret itself ran and the 9 ads from movie companies, this year the list of major corporations was quite limited. However, we of course still urge you to contact the corporations who did sponsor this indecent display. We truly believe that as a result of letters of concern in past years, advertisers are staying away. Your voice is needed!
