An email from a friend of St. Louis, MO “… I went to a Walmart store here in the St. Louis area to ask that the SI Swimsuit magazines be removed. I was informed that it was Company policy to remove any magazine and send back to the buyer if ‘anyone’ complains about it being offensive, etc. Result; the magazines were removed promptly! …”Two emails showing what your influence of concern, too, can do. Hi Bill, I went to a Walmart store here in the St. Louis area to ask that the SI Swimsuit magazines be removed. I was informed that it was Company policy to remove any magazine and send back to the buyer if ‘anyone’ complains about it being offensive, etc. Result; the magazines were removed promptly! A friend of mine, copied above, and I visited 2 stores last year and had complete success. Are you aware of this policy of Walmart? This is a powerful capability activists like us should use to remove these temptuous mags. The mags have been out for only a week. Wouldn’t it be a good idea for the ADA to send out an action item to all members across the US urging them to try to visit their local Walmart asap and ask that the mags be removed. only one person has to request the removal and they are gone! This could have a significant impact on at least Walmart sales of the mag. It would be even more powerful if the ADA would team to do this with the AFA, MIM, Focus on the Family and other organizations that you could contact. What do you think? I’m going to send out a Citizens Against Pornography (I’m a member) action item to our email list asking people to stop at Walmart. Thanks. J.M. ADA note: We urge you to go to your local Wal-Mart and do likewise. Call or email us and let us know of your results and the store location. When I was shopping at Lofino’s in Dayton (technically, Beavercreek), Ohio, Saturday night, I noticed some copies of the “Sports Illustrated” Swimsuit Edition on the magazine rack in one of the checkout lanes. I picked one up and showed it to the cashier, explaining how I thought it was offensive. She took it and called the store manager (Steve by name), I repeated my issue to him, and the next thing I saw him do was take the copies of the “SI” Swimsuit Edition from the rack and place them face down on a table in one of the closed checkout lanes. (Unfortunately you could still see the women advertising Budweiser on their bikinis, but you had to be tall to do so by looking down, as opposed to the magazine rack.) Hopefully this is the start of something good! Contact info: Lofino’s 3245 Seajay Dr. Beavercreek, OH 45430, (937) 426-0060, http://www.lofinos.com/ J.C. Dayton, OH Another person expressing concern Bill: FYI, Wal-Mart is putting their swimsuit magazine right in front of the aisles. I talked to the manager last year and she took them away from the front of the store. Now they are back. … K.V. ==================================================== Our campaign for decency at the checkouts — A small but significant number of you have already requested the ADA membership card and the DVD that will provide helpful hints and suggestions as to how to speak up for decency at your local checkout.
