The pornography victimization connection. Not that many years ago seldom was there a news story regarding sex crimes involving teachers with students. There were those few voices expressing concern regarding the increasing flow of pornography via X-rated videos and the increase of sexual imagery – subtle and not-so-subtle. ‘Be careful,’ these voices heralded – people like Don Wildmon, Jim Dobson, Judith Reisman, Phil Burress, David Caton, Bob Peters, Alan Sears, Pat Trueman and others. ‘If pornographers have their way and make sexual imagery and themes mainstream, we will see increases of sexual deviancy and aberrance.’ What we place before our eyes does impact. Or as the old Christian song went “Oh be careful little eyes what you see. Be careful little eyes what you see. For the Father up above is looking down in love – Oh be careful little eyes what you see.” How grievous the regular happenings in our communities. Now we hear and see news programs reporting sting operations revealing that numbers of men have been caught prepared to engage in sexual behaviors with youth. The power of sexual imagery – pornography, pornography addictions. (doctors, lawyers, pastors, priests, judges, police officers, teachers, no occupation is exempt). Read it and weep. There is a sound reason once again for God’s Word of loving warning, exhortation and counsel: “I will place no evil thing before my eye [Psalm 101:3a]; “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” [Job 31:1] “Coach’s arrest in Internet sex case stuns students” http://www.mlive.com/news/grpress/index.ssf?/base/news-35/117570410652390.xml&coll=6 In this news piece from yesterday’s Grand Rapids Press we read of a 35 year old soccer coach soliciting a supposed 14 year old child and if that wasn’t enough there was a second youth coach nabbed – a 32 year old wrestling coach who also had propositioned a 14 year old girl. Further in today’s Detroit Free Press appear the following headlines: “Mom knew her 14-year-old daughter had sex with men, police say” {Myspace.com related) http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070405/NEWS04/70405026 Also in today’s Detroit Free Press – “New trial for Oak Park teacher convicted of sexual assault stands, for now” http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070405/NEWS03/70405029 Read and weep. About the best that the Press has to offer is this counsel — Protecting Children from predators The Attorney General’s office encourages parents to check their children’s “buddy lists” for suspicious screen names. Wolters (one of the predators) allegedly used a sexually graphic name. The office also offered safety tips, including the following: ** Place a computer with Internet access in a location visible to other family members. ** Never give out identifying information online — name, home address, school name or phone number. ** A teen or child should tell a trusted adult if something makes them scared, uncomfortable or confused. ** Parents should become familiar with blocking and monitoring programs. ** Never allow a child to arrange a face-to-face meeting with any other computer user without parental permission or accompaniment. ** Never respond to messages or bulletin board items that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent or threatening. ** Report inappropriate messages to law enforcement. ** Remember that people online may not be who they seem, and what they’re telling you may not be true. http://www.michigan.gov/ag [Taken from Grand Rapids Press, April 4, 2007] May we as Christians speak against pornography, obscenity and indecency wherever we find it and take opportunity to instill into those coming after us the powerful principle of pursuing holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. [Hebrews 12:14] Lastly, quit procrastinating – invest in an Internet filter. See below: American Decency Association P.O.
