The coarsening of our culture – one ad at a time

Turn on the television and more and more you see companies using sexual imagery and nudity in advertising. With Victoria’s Secret leading the charge, mainline companies are falling in line behind VS and imitating their example. A company such as JC Penney, as we brought to your attention, has sexed up their advertising. And recently we alerted you to Dove lotion using nudity in their advertisements. Now Rice-A-Roni of all things is following suit. Rice-A-Roni is advertising a line of rice and pasta dishes, called “Nature’s Way” using the theme of nudity to do so. The ad shows numerous men and women working outside in fields and orchards completely nude – only well placed objects obscure private areas. Some may say that it’s ridiculous for us to be bothered by a corporation using the theme of nudity in advertising – they might say, “after all, the ad isn’t erotic, per se”. However, as we allow standards to be lowered in seemingly little things, indecency gains a foothold and we once again see another example of the slippery slope. As one corporation crosses the line with no repercussions, others will emulate and soon indecency and sexual imagery in advertising will be the norm. And as this occurs, our children and grandchildren will pay the price – growing up in a culture that robs them of their innocence, never knowing anything different than a sex-saturated society. What we view has great power over our thoughts and ultimately our actions. The ramifications of millions of young children being desensitized to illicit sexual themes and images are truly frightening. We urge you to contact Rice-a-Roni and their corporate owner, PepsiCo, and let them know you don’t appreciate their adding to the coarsening of our culture with their nudity-laced ad. PepsiCo.
