For years we have stood against pornography in this ministry from the very first days when we were a volunteer organization under the name "Citizens Against Pornography".It was in 1985. There were mom and pop stores selling pornographic magazines. A couple of us went around to all the stores in our county asking store owners and/or managers to discontinue the sale of pornography. We met with the county prosecutor and brought copies of various magazines that were being sold. We met with churches and asked pastors if they would hand out our humble one page newsletter informing Christians on the degrading nature of pornography. We began to see prayers answered as numbers of stores discontinued selling pornographic magazines (and a little later X-rated videos when videos came out in 1987 or so). We became a chapter of the National Federation for Decency (the NFD) which later became the AFA in 1988 – American Family Association. Little by little because of God's leading and empowerment and because of positive results AFA asked me to be their first named state director. My friend David Caton was named the state director of Florida a very short time afterwards. He remains a great warrior for Decency based out of Tampa, Florida. We were off and running and haven't stopped since. Our friendship and affection and regard are still solidly with our friend and mentor Don Wildmon, chairman of AFA but we have been under the banner of American Decency Association since August 1999. The battle has changed significantly and it seems that many have thrown up their hands and said what's the use. But, I am here to say that we must never, ever give up until Jesus comes again. There must be many voices multiplying and standing up and saying wherever pornography, obscenity and indecency is found: this is wrong. Stop selling this magazine or that DVD. Stop displaying this pornographic display! etc.,etc. It IS a very, very difficult battle but Christians who love their Lord are called to be His people and to be that salt that light in that difficult spot. This summer we are going to host a gathering along the lines of what our beloved friends in Tupelo, Mississippi have done for years – host a conference for Christian activists. We are tentatively looking at the last weekend in July. Stay tuned. If you are interested, email us and we'll put you on a special mailing list to that effect. Email me at bjohnson@americandecency.org Lastly, it is a battle that must first be fought and won on the inside. We received this gracious offer from an anonymous donor. "… I would like to again offer a $15,000 matching grant to anyone who hasn't given since 12/31/05 or to anyone who gives more than what they gave in 2006 (e.g. if they gave $1,000 in '06 and gave $1500 in '07, we will match the $500 increase as long as it was given between 9/10/07-12/31/07). We will match these gifts received from 9/10/07 through 12/31/07." Help us meet this challenge.
