Hardcore pornography. A winnable war? Under the Reagan/George H. Bush administrations, the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Enforcement Section aggressively took it to the pornography industry. Kingpins of pornography were put behind bars including Rubin Sturman, the then Kingpin of pornography. (He died behind bars in recent years.) If during those years you were to peruse the Adult Video News (a pornographer’s trade rag), you would discover a far different tone to the commentary pages than over the last number of years. At that time, the pornography industry was back on its heels. Their criminality was targeted. It wasn’t a time to flaunt their wares but rather a time to exercise constraint. During the Clinton years, significant ground was lost especially as the Internet became a reality with pornography’s addictive and destructive tentacles reaching out into millions upon millions of unsuspecting and vulnerable households with virtually no law enforcement intervention from the Fed. Under the George W. Bush administration, there were high hopes that the U.S. would return to a time when obscenity was again judiciously targeted as a local enforcement priority. With John Ashcroft named as Attorney General, optimism was high. Pro-decency leaders met with Mr. Ashcroft appealing to him to beef up efforts to lead the charge against a pornography industry that with each month had become emboldened by month after month of law enforcement do-nothing. Mr. Ashcroft was followed by Alberto Gonzalez who articulated gravity and earnestness in his desire to elevate obscenity as a high Bush administration law enforcement priority. Unfortunately, his words have been followed by inaction. Increasingly, pornography has become legitimized via the Internet, cable and network television, mail order pornography, etc.. Concerned Women for America’s Chief Counsel Jan LaRue writes a definitive article that strongly and clearly articulates the plight of America as a result of the failure of this present administration to address the pornography cancer in America. Quoting: “‘I’m mad as —- and I’m not going to take it anymore,'” shouts the unhinged TV anchorman in the movie, ‘Network,’ as he urges Americans to ‘go to your windows, throw them open and repeat after me.’ If your patience has run out while waiting for the Bush Administration to enforce the federal obscenity laws, it’s time to go to their windows. Another study was released telling us what we already know, ‘Rising Number of Kids Exposed to Online Porn,’ Associated Press, February 5, 2007. That’s yet another reason why if I’m asked to review one more bill that would put a bandaid on the cultural cancer of pornography, I’ll be out my window. …” http://www.cwfa.org/articles/12411/LEGAL/pornography/index.htm For further reference: Hey men.
