Boycott of Movie Gallery makes impact

By: Steve Huston

Movie Gallery is known nationwide for its aggressive distribution of hard-core pornography. Among video rental chains, Movie Gallery is observably the worst offender in this regard.

Many of the company’s stores offer hard-core porn in so-called “back rooms,” while the rest of their pornographic offerings are placed on the shelves in full view of children.

We at American Decency Association, as well as our friends at American Family Association, have actively picketed and boycotted Movie Gallery and continue to do so and encourage concerned individuals across the country to do the same. Many are unaware of this company’s aggressive promotion and sale of pornography and the menace that Movie Gallery is to local communities.

Statements from former employees, managers and customers attest to the deplorable and unconscionable corporate practices of purposefully placing pornographic videos right next to the children section, as well as Movie Gallery’s overall arrogance and pride in its promotion of and profit from sexually explicit material. This corporation shows complete disregard for the welfare of children and families and the communities it relies on for business.

But perhaps Movie Gallery’s detestable practices are beginning to catch up to them. The Associated Press reports that Movie Gallery Inc. has filed for bankruptcy and stated that the company “indicated it could close additional stores to save money.” According to the AP article, however, “Movie Gallery said Chairman and Chief Executive Joe Malugen and other managers would remain, a move one analyst called a mistake.

‘I think that this management team has been in over their heads for a couple of years,’ said analyst Michael Pachter, of Los Angeles.”

ADA believes the nation-wide boycott of Movie Gallery has made a significant impact. As concerned citizens chose not to do business with a corporation that brings damage to families, individuals, and communities, the salt is being salt and the light is expelling darkness.

We encourage you to boycott (or continue to boycott) Movie Gallery and to tell those you know to do so as well. Now more than ever your voice is needed! We also encourage you to call Movie Gallery and let them know that you won’t do business with pornographers and urge them at this time of a corporate shakeup and evaluation to rid their stores of pornography.
