A welcome ally for decency

By: American Decency Staff

This past Friday afternoon I received a last minute call from CNN asking for an interview regarding Victoria’s Secret mall displays. Welcoming the opportunity to shed light on this issue nationwide, I of course accepted, at the same time preparing myself for being the sole voice of concern as is often the case in these types of interviews.I knew there would also be a representative from Americans Against Censorship defending Victoria’s Secret and I was ready for the CNN moderators to be neutral at best, if not antagonistic toward the issue of decency. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the CNN moderator equally as indignant over Victoria’s Secret erotic mall displays as I am. As a father, the CNN moderator expressed outrage that his children are exposed to such erotic images in the mall, stating: “It’s happened to me. Walking through the mall, you’re on the way to see Santa this time of year, and there’s the 12-foot poster of the lady in the teddy and the lingerie. … “I’m not anti-lingerie, but get it in the back of the store – my two kids don’t need to see that as we’re walking to Santa. … It’s happening in malls across the country, and folks, some parents like myself are not too happy about it. …When it’s coming at me, … It’s overwhelming for the ten-year old and, as Bill pointed out, it could be overwhelming for me, as well. To view the interview go to: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2007/11/30/prime.news.victoria.secret.mannequin.cnn On the CNN site, there is also opportunity to email your opinion regarding VS and their erotic displays. And as Victoria’s Secret airs their so-called “Fashion Showâ€Â tonight, look for tomorrow’s email where we’ll let you know which corporate sponsors chose to align their company with raunch. This now yearly pornographic display should not be accepted on public airwaves, and we should not grow complacent in protesting it. In a separate report by CNN, we were encouraged to read that “overall viewership has declined each year, from more than 9 million in 2002 to just more than 6.5 million last year.â€Â Don’t accept the proliferation of pornographic images in the family marketplace. Speak out on this issue. Your voice is needed! American Decency Association Bill Johnson, President P.O. Box 202 Fremont, MI 49412 ph:231-924-4050 fax:231-924-1966
