Will big flags mean big business?

By: Steve Huston

NOTE: The following is NOT an endorsement for the Steak ‘n Shake restaurant. While we often speak out against what many stores or restaurants are doing which go against America and/or decency, it is only fitting that we point out when a business is promoting American values or acting in righteousness. We are grateful for opportunities like this, when we can point to an organization which is doing good things.

When Cracker Barrell decided to change its logo – hoping to change tradition for trendy – Steak ‘n Shake was quick to criticize with a post on X in August: “Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and now the CEO wants to just scrape it all away. At Steak ‘n Shake, we take pride in our history, our families, and American values. All are welcome. We will never market ourselves away from our past in a cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers.” (FOX Business)

More than just taking a swipe at their competitor, this 90-year-old fast-food burger chain has decided to also show their commitment to American values, tradition, and patriotism. Steak ‘n Shake has now decided to “go big” with the American flag. Posting on X in early October, “The flag installations have begun at Steak n Shake. Every Steak n Shake is getting the tallest and biggest American flag that local governments will allow! Steak n Shake proudly supports American values and traditions.

While Cracker Barrel’s announcement that they were changing their traditional logo was met with many complaints and much opposition, Steak ‘n Shake’s post on X supporting American values with big flags was met with even bigger compliments and praise.

If one looks at the above post on X, he or she will see a Steak ‘n Shake restaurant building in the background sporting the words “BEEF TALLOW FRIES.” FOX Business reports: “Steak ‘n Shake says all locations will be ‘RFK’d’ as they swap vegetable oil for a healthier beef tallow to cook their iconic shoe string fries.” (“By March 1 ALL locations. Fries will be RFK’d!”)

Admittedly, that will turn off vegetarians from their fries, but what’s more American than choice? And Steak ‘n Shake’s Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Edwards, is happy to both offer choice of where to go and options to bring them in: “We love our vegetarians. We’ve got the best milkshakes, Zagat-rated #1 milkshakes, at Steak ‘n Shake…We’ve been around for over 90 years selling steak burgers; we’re famous for steak burgers and fries. We understand; they have the freedom to choose. We’re an American brand; we believe in freedom. We believe that they have the freedom to choose what’s best for them. No problem. We think we can all get along; have a milkshake and those who enjoy the beef tallow fries and the steak burgers, they’ll enjoy that.

The saying “Go woke, go broke,” has proven itself true over and over. This chain, although it’s had to make some cutbacks in the near past, is deciding to put money into American values and the health of their customers. For them, it’s beginning to pay off.

All of this to simply say that there are businesses that are truly American: standing for American values, traditions, and the people they serve. There are businesses that claim to be Christian or claim to hold to traditional American values, only to find out that, in fact, they are surreptitiously undermining the very values they claim to uphold. There are also businesses that are more interested in pushing an agenda regardless of losing profit, harming their communities, and attempting to erode the American values and principles that this nation was founded upon.

This is America; any of these businesses have the freedom to operate as they wish. BUT, every American also has the freedom of how they will choose to spend their money and what they will choose to support. We urge our readers to know where their money is going and for what it is being used. I pray that each of us will think beyond today, recognizing that our choices today affect the course of tomorrow. While not limited to business alone, this is true nationally, personally, and spiritually. Be wise!
