Look What God Has Done

By: Chris Johnson

This summer, my 9 year-old daughter fell in love with the game of softball. She got along great with her team, began to grow into her body and understand her own abilities, and had coaches who were able to help her understand what was going on in the game.

This is a big change from last season, when that coach, bless her big heart, responded to an email from the league saying they had practically no coaches for most of the teams signed up and volunteered, despite, as she told us, knowing absolutely nothing about the game.

Last year, they played every single game learning very little and knowing they had almost no chance at winning.

What a difference it makes, knowing that your efforts can have a payoff!

I’m reminded of this as I look at the “wins” delivered in the last week by the Supreme Court, particularly of course the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but also decisions regarding freedom of carrying licensed concealed weapons, freedom for school employees to lead students in voluntary prayer, and upholding the legitimacy of voter I. D. laws. These wins reflect, not only the courage and wisdom of some of our justices, but the decades-worth of prayers, hard work, and fiscal support of Christians – and secular conservatives – around the country.

Our organization alone has put out – who knows how many – articles urging prayer for the overturn of Roe v. Wade, and that’s not even our primary focus. Yet, I honestly never thought I’d see it happen in my time.

Like my daughter’s burgeoning softball career, it’s nice to be reminded that we can win.

And the Supreme Court isn’t the only one “winning.” In July’s Newsletter, I wrote about the Christian Reformed Church firmly denouncing homosexual practice, a decision which is likely to mean big changes ahead for depressingly evermore liberal Calvin University.

There are other signs of societal shift in a more conservative direction, as homeschooling rates shoot up, many states are seriously considering school choice legislation, church attendance for churches which adhere to Biblical standards continues to rise.

Readers may recall our reporting on the situation in a town not far from us – Whitehall, MI – where students were being bullied for not participating in “Pride Month” activities. We’re happy to report that after significant parental pushback, Pride Month didn’t even happen at that school this year.

Second to Roe v. Wade being overturned, perhaps the most shocking impact has been the impact that parents have had on Disney’s bottom dollar after the “family entertainment” company strongly supported LGBTQ activist teachers who were intent on discussing their sex lives and sexual ideology with kids younger than third grade. Following conservative pushback, Disney stock fell 19% in a single month. Or, it could be free speech advocate Elon Musk pursuing the purchase of the internet political opinion factory, Twitter!

And, of course, even liberal news organizations are expecting a “Red Wave,” after the devastating impact that President Biden’s policies have had on our economy.

Hearing all those victories in a list like that you might assume that I think all we do is win, and that’s certainly not the case either, but it is nice to be reminded that it does happen.

Much more so, however, my purpose is to remind us where the credit goes when these good things happen. After the Dobbs decision to overturn Roe particularly, there has been lots of back-patting for Donald Trump and the people who voted for him, which I think is fine and appropriate, except that the amount I have seen in comparison to those who have said “Look what God has done!” has been, well, incomparable. Similarly to Governor DeSantis in regards to Disney and to Musk in regards to Twitter.

Certainly, what all these men have done has taken courage and what the pro-life and conservative movement has done over the years has taken persistence, but let us remember that all authority comes from God. From Him and to Him and THROUGH Him, are all things. He is the Giver of all good gifts, from winning softball games to saving the lives of millions of future babies.

Glory be to Him!
