Keep your candle lit

God’s truth is marching on!  And with it the wonderment of when Jesus is in fact coming again. He is – I hope you know – and we are to be ready always!  That’s what the Bible says.  Many of us know this to be TRUTH!

The writings of the now-deceased, great author, speaker, and evangelist, Francis Schaeffer, often come to my mind in these days.  They have for a very long time.   Schaeffer, some of you will recall, had a video series and a powerful book entitled “How Should We then Live?”  Schaeffer died in 1983.  I was 33 years old.  Another of Schaeffer’s books which particularly gripped me, and still has a hold me on me, is his book “The Great Evangelical Disaster.”  In this book Schaeffer spoke of the ongoing weakness of the church to “conform to this world” rather than to hold fast to God’s eternal standards of holiness, which should lead to both boldly and lovingly coming against the wiles of the devil and the faltering mankind:  abortion, pornography, homosexuality, same sex marriage, divorce, rape, incest, man’s incivility to man, terrorism, Shariah, Islam …

The Bible says “In the last days there will be ….” And it lists a litany of things that will be unfolding in those days (II Timothy 3).  It’s quite a list as you are probably aware. Things like…. Well let me quote it for you:

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,  treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.  For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

So where does that put us?  I’m not going to make any predictions about when that time ultimately IS – when Jesus is coming back.  Nor does any man or woman know the date or time.  Yet, I believe that it could be very soon.

Considering the division and acrimony we’ve seen in this past election cycle alone, are there things that point to the fact that in the latter days there will be times of great difficulty?  Look again at the scripture passage above.

You know there is.

I pledged to myself that I would keep this short as I’m sure that your senses, like mine, are particularly overwhelmed by the analyses of yesterday’s mid-term election.

I close with these few reminders:

This world is not our home.
We are pilgrims in a foreign land.  Psalm 137

Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness …

Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind … Romans 12:1,2

Keep your candles lit, dear brothers and sisters, – and be in the Lord! John 3:16
