By Chris Johnson The Johnson family has been known to plan vacation travel routes around one particular restaurant that we in Michigan unfortunately are not blessed with and do not get to enjoy very often. For instance, when my friend Jeremiah, my wife, and I went to Washington, D.C. for the Value Voters Summit last summer, we probably added close to an hour to our already 12 hour drive time by trying to track down a Chick-Fil-A restaurant. Credited with inventing the chicken sandwich in 1946, Chick-Fil-A founder Truett Cathy built a large restaurant chain on his "personal and business philosophy based on biblical principles." Chick-Fil-A is known by its customers for the exclusively Christian music that is played in its restaurants as well as being one of the few national business to be closed on Sunday, with no exceptions. Cathy also reflected his Christian faith philanthropically. Truett Cathy used his business success to first start a scholarship program, and later a retreat center both of which go by the name 'WinShape' to reflect their goal of shaping/winning students, businesspeople, and traditional marriages. The principles that Chick-Fil-A is built on is obviously a strong foundation as the chain consists of over 1,500 locations in 39 states as well as Washington, D.C. However a recent controversy has rocked the popular restaurant as the homosexual community attacked Chick-Fil-A for donating sandwiches to an event hosted by a group which homosexuals believe to be "antigay." The homosexual news source "The Advocate" summarizes: "The chicken chain caught flak earlier this month when it was discovered it had sponsored a marriage event run by the antigay Pennsylvania Family Institute (Chick-fil-A later dropped its name from banner ads promoting the event). In 2009 the company supported the antigay group Focus on the Family." What “The Advocateâ€Â describes as "catching flak" includes the temporary removal of the restaurant's services from the campus of Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), where the restaurant offered their chicken sandwiches and milkshakes at several locations every Wednesday. IUSB chancellor Una Mae Reck recently reviewed the decision to remove Chick-Fil-A and reversed it. As a Christian and a huge fan of Chick-Fil-A, I have never been more proud of a company or craved a chicken sandwich more. For those of you in the 39 states graced by this restaurant, have a chicken sandwich for me. For you fortunate ones and the rest of us, let's let Chick-Fil-A know that we appreciate their stand.
